About this opportunity:

Fast feedback from testing cycles is important, however the quality of the feedback provided and the developers’ trust in it are just as important. The developer’s productivity suffers when the test results, in addition to a longer execution time, are non-deterministic (i.e., cannot be trusted), known as test flakiness. In literature, the most common definition of a flaky test is a test that exhibits both passing and failing outcomes when no changes are introduced into the code base.

The purpose of this work is to reduce and eliminate test flakiness using detection, and automated root cause analysis. The flaky test detection will assist in determining if the fault is actual (i.e., caused by source code changes) or due to flakiness, saving debugging time and effort of analyzing logs or error messages. Such a detection system will prevent test cases from being re-run, saving resources and keeping testing budget. We would also like to investigate if test flakiness can be predicted prior to execution, using advanced AI/ML techniques, when a new test case is delivered to a test suite

What you will do:

The following research and practical activities will be part of the thesis work:

- Limit the scope of the study by investigating whether the test flakiness is due to production code, testing code, or testing infrastructure.
- Develop a proof-of-concept implementation of state-of-art algorithms (using AI/ML, if needed) to detect, predict, and decrease test flakiness in collaboration with the investigated team.

The skills you bring:

- Master´s student in computer science, computer engineering or similar.
- Background in software testing and AI/ML is preferred.
