Senior UX Designer – Generative AI

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior UX Designer to shape the user experience of a
Generative AI platform for a UK government department. This role focuses on making
complex AI behaviour — retrieval, uncertainty, hallucination risk, and human-in-the-loop
checkpoints — understandable and trustworthy for government users, while meeting
GOV.UK Service Standard expectations.

Key Responsibilities

User Research & Discovery
Conduct user research with internal government users and stakeholders to understand
tasks, pain points, and trust concerns around AI-assisted workflows, feeding findings into
design and product decisions.

Interaction Design for AI Workflows

Design end-to-end user journeys for RAG-based question-answering, agentic workflows,
and human-in-the-loop review steps, ensuring users understand what the AI is doing, where
information comes from, and when human judgement is required.

Responsible AI UX

Translate guardrails and human-in-the-loop checkpoints defined by policy/technical leads
into clear, usable interface patterns (e.g. confidence indicators, source citations, escalation
flows) — an execution and craft role, not a policy-setting one.

Prototyping & Testing

Produce wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs (e.g. in Figma); run usability
testing sessions with real users and iterate designs based on findings and evaluation metrics
from the engineering team.

Design System Stewardship

Ensure all designs align with, and where necessary extend, the GOV.UK Design System,
maintaining consistency across the platform.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work closely with Product, UI Developers, and AI/Backend engineers to ensure designs are
technically feasible and correctly implemented, and to align on evaluation-driven iteration.
Documentation & Handover
Contribute UX rationale, research findings, and design decisions to "Docs-as-Code" artifacts
supporting the OKUA knowledge-transfer framework.

Required Skills & Experience

● Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end UX design for complex, data-heavy, or AI-
powered products
● Experience conducting user research (interviews, usability testing, contextual inquiry)
and synthesising findings into actionable design decisions
● Experience designing for trust, transparency, and explainability in software that
presents automated or AI-generated outputs
● Proficiency with design/prototyping tools (e.g. Figma)
● Practical experience working with or designing for the GOV.UK Design System
● Strong understanding of accessibility and inclusive design principles (WCAG)
● Comfortable working within secure, regulated environments and handling sensitive
data appropriately
Desirable Experience
● Direct experience designing UX for LLM/RAG-based products or other AI-assisted
decision-making tools
● Experience delivering digital services within UK central government or the wider
public sector, including participation in service assessments
● Familiarity with GOV.UK Service Standard expectations
● Experience designing human-in-the-loop or escalation workflows in regulated
environments
● Exposure to open-source design systems or communities
