This Phlebotomist role focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and processing services while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, assist with troubleshooting and training, and recommend workflow improvements in a fast-paced clinical environment. The position requires strong attention to detail, excellent customer service, and the ability to manage the full patient process from start to finish.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and professional manner.
- Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy prior to collection and processing.
- Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against provider scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens appropriately for transport, following all protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimens at the required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following detailed procedures specific to each protocol.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information and perform data entry related to specimen collection and processing.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, policies, and safety standards.
- Provide excellent customer service while managing the patient experience from start to finish, including drawing blood, processing specimens, and completing order entry.
- Support troubleshooting of workflow issues and contribute recommendations to improve efficiency and quality within the laboratory or patient service center.
- Assist with training and supporting team members as needed to ensure consistent adherence to procedures.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven experience performing blood draws on geriatric patient populations.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with specimen handling, including blood draw, labeling, sample preparation, sample storage, and specimen management.
- Ability to work with patient specimens in a laboratory, blood bank, or biobank setting.
- Competence in operating centrifuges and handling blood samples and other biological samples safely and accurately.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail when matching requisitions, labeling specimens, and entering data.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong data entry skills for recording patient and specimen information.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally with patients and clinical staff.
- Ability to read and understand physicians orders and follow detailed protocols.
- Understanding of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations.
- High school diploma and/or GED completion.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with pediatric patients for blood draws is a plus.
- Familiarity with Cerner or similar electronic medical record or laboratory information systems.
- Experience in medical assisting or related clinical support roles.
- Background in working within laboratory, blood bank, or biobank environments.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced clinic or laboratory setting.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Potential for temp-to-hire engagement, offering an opportunity for longer-term employment based on performance.
Work Environment
This role is based within a network of patient service centers and clinical facilities on the south side of the city. Phlebotomists may work as floaters or rovers, with a designated home base site and the expectation to travel between nearby locations as needed. One position has a home base at an Emerson-area facility, with potential floating to clinics such as Shadeland, Meridian PSC, South Port, and Park Dale PSC. Another position has a home base at the Park Dale PSC facility and is generally more stationary, while still requiring flexibility to float when needed. Training takes place at a designated facility in Indianapolis. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, with hours generally between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and slight variations depending on clinic needs (for example, 7:00 a.m.4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m.5:00 p.m.). The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, involving frequent interaction with geriatric and other patient populations, and requires consistent use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage systems. Work includes regular computer use for order entry and data management, including Microsoft Office and clinical software such as Cerner. Mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable for travel between sites. Dress is typically professional clinical attire appropriate for a patient-facing laboratory setting, with adherence to safety and infection-control requirements.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
