Principal Engineer - MV/HV Cable Design

Job Purpose

We are looking for a Principal Engineer – MV/HV Cable Design to act as a technical authority within our Research & Development team. You will lead the design, development and ongoing improvement of medium- and high-voltage submarine cable products for offshore wind, as well as power cable components used in hybrid power umbilical systems. Through technical leadership, robust engineering standards and innovative product development, you will help strengthen our capabilities, improve quality and efficiency, and support the continued growth of our renewables portfolio.

Job Description

- Provide technical leadership and act as an authority on MV/HV submarine cable design within the R&D team.

- Lead, manage, deliver and document R&D projects from concept through to completion.

- Develop, maintain and apply cable design rules, technical standards and documentation requirements.

- Complete and review cable design calculations, technical studies and product assessments.

- Identify technical risks, review client specifications and resolve complex technical queries.

- Support the management of non-conformances, design-rule deviations and project concessions.

- Work closely with internal teams, clients and suppliers throughout the product lifecycle.

- Develop and integrate new technologies, templates, calculations and engineering tools to improve quality and efficiency.

- Provide technical guidance, on-the-job training and mentoring to engineers across the team.

- Support the development of dynamic inter-array cable systems for floating offshore wind and related power cable solutions.

You are meant for this job if:

- A degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline, preferably electrical or mechanical engineering; a physics degree may also be considered.

- Chartered Engineer status, or the demonstrable ability to achieve chartership within a reasonable timeframe.

- Extensive experience in high-voltage submarine cables within offshore wind and/or the oil and gas sector, including detailed cable-system design, research and development, and manufacturing processes.

- Strong knowledge of submarine cable construction, rating, operating limits, manufacture, installation and operation.

- Good working knowledge of relevant industry standards for submarine cable design, qualification and testing, including applicable IEC standards and CIGRE recommendations.

- Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical-reporting skills, with excellent attention to detail.

- Experience working in a fast-paced engineering environment and communicating effectively with clients, suppliers and multidisciplinary teams.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

- Desirable experience includes a relevant master’s degree, cable testing and offshore installation, technical publications or industry forums, and engineering tools such as Mathcad, CYMCAP or COMSOL.
