HIRING SALARY RANGE : Commensurate with education and experience
NCSSM and the Humanities Department foster an environment of collaboration across departments and divisions and support community-engaged service and research. The department offers courses in four World Languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, and Spanish), American Studies, and a broad range of English and interdisciplinary Humanities courses. Offerings in our Fine Arts program include studio and performance courses in the visual arts, music, and drama. Our program also includes student-and faculty-led seminars and independent studies.
Description of Duties:
This position is a full-time, ten-month appointment in the Department of Humanities at the NCSSM-Morganton campus, with full benefits through the state of North Carolina. The position reports to the Morganton Chair of Humanities and is responsible for providing instruction for assigned courses.
- Teach 3 in-person, residential courses in Spanish and French language and culture per semester and two, two-week courses during the January Term. Introductory through advanced levels, using the communicative approach.
- Develop multi-level, proficiency-based curricula that provide entry points for students of various proficiencies, including heritage speakers.
- Develop and teach innovative and engaging Spanish and French language and culture curricula NCSSM’s residential and highly interactive online programs.
- Teaching expectations include:
- Develop and communicate clear course objectives and goals;
- Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills;
- Hold office hours and tutorial sessions;
- Regularly monitor and evaluate students’ progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance;
- Structure and manage an environment conducive to learning
- Mentor students-both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities.
- Use appropriate educational technology for face-to-face and remote learning
- Model for students responsibility to self and others;
- Follow the school’s philosophy, policies, and procedures;
- Participate in departmental, faculty, and staff meetings;
- Serve on departmental, faculty, and school-wide standing committees;
- Write recommendations for as many as 15 students each year, as requested;
- Participate in professional development and growth activities;
- Participate in one or more of the following activities:
- Provide professional service and engagement in the field;
- Assist students with special projects, independent and individual study, and seminar-based studies;
- Participate in the NCSSM admissions process by recruiting, selecting, and advising prospective students;
- Participate in NCSSM alumni activities;
- Provide assistance for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Since NCSSM is committed to an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the humanities, applicants should demonstrate professional, native, or near-native proficiency of Spanish and French language and their cultural and historical contexts.

Minimum Education and Experience

Education and Experience:
A Master’s degree in Spanish, French, second language acquisition (TESOL/ESOL/ESL) . Candidates currently pursuing their degree must provide proof of degree conferral by the hire date.
Language proficiency in both Spanish and French. Applicants may demonstrate this proficiency through being a native speaker, holding a degree in the language, holding a certificate indicating advanced language study, or official documentation of language proficiency at an ACTFL rating of Advanced-High (or higher), CEFR level C1 (or higher), or a passing score on the relevant Praxis II World Language Subject Assessment.
Expertise with pedagogy in French and Spanish language instruction at the high school or undergraduate level.
