Job Description:

Are you a Medical Laboratory Technician looking to apply your clinical laboratory skills in a unique and rewarding environment? Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to support diagnostic testing services within the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

This position is ideal for both experienced MLTs and recent graduates seeking to build their careers in laboratory medicine. Using the same core laboratory skills developed in human healthcare settings, the selected candidate will perform diagnostic testing on samples from a variety of animal species. No prior veterinary experience is required. We provide training on veterinary-specific procedures and species differences.

Schedule:

- Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Rotating Saturday coverage from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Key Responsibilities:

- Perform diagnostic testing, including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, coagulation testing, and cytology.
- Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory analyzers and instrumentation.
- Perform quality control procedures and routine maintenance to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Support blood banking and coagulation testing procedures.
- Enter, review, and maintain patient and specimen information within the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Prepare and coordinate samples for referral testing and external laboratory submissions.
- Train and assist students, residents, and new staff on laboratory procedures and equipment.
- Maintain laboratory inventory, supplies, reagents, and records to support daily operations.
- Collaborate with faculty, clinicians, pathologists, and laboratory staff in a fast-paced diagnostic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience working in a clinical, diagnostic, healthcare, research, or academic laboratory through employment, internships, clinical rotations, or coursework.
- Experience with laboratory techniques, including sample preparation, staining, microscopy, and specimen processing.
- Experience following laboratory procedures, quality control practices, and documentation requirements.
- Experience operating laboratory instrumentation and technical equipment.
