Position Purpose

The Fitter-Welder is responsible for laying out, fitting, assembling, and welding structural steel components according to approved drawings, shop details, weld procedures, and quality requirements.

Primary Responsibilities

- Job Layout & Preparation

- Review shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and weld symbols.

- Verify dimensions, material sizes, and piece marks before starting work.

- Lay out beams, columns, braces, plates, angles, channels, and miscellaneous steel.

- Measure and mark locations for holes, stiffeners, clips, plates, connections, and attachments.

- Identify discrepancies between drawings and material before fabrication.

- Verify material grade and heat/traceability information when required.

- Use tape measures, squares, levels, framing tools, lasers, and other measuring equipment.

- Fitting & Assembly

- Position and align structural steel components according to drawings.

- Set proper dimensions, squareness, plumb, and alignment.

- Use clamps, jigs, fixtures, strongbacks, and temporary attachments as required.

- Tack weld components to maintain proper fit-up.

- Verify fit-up before final welding.

- Make adjustments to compensate for weld shrinkage and distortion.

- Welding

- Perform FCAW, GMAW, SMAW, or other qualified welding processes as required.

- Follow approved WPS requirements.

- Maintain proper preheat, interpass temperature, amperage, voltage, travel speed, and weld size.

- Produce welds that meet applicable quality requirements.

- Inspect welds visually and correct defects when identified.

- Perform weld repairs according to approved procedures.

- Quality Control

- Check completed work against drawings before releasing the job.

- Verify dimensions and weld sizes.

- Ensure parts are properly identified and traceable.

- Correct fit-up, dimensional, or welding issues before the assembly moves to the next department.

- Communicate drawing discrepancies or material issues to supervision and QC.

- Safety & Housekeeping

- Follow all company safety procedures.

- Wear always required PPE.

- Inspect welding equipment, grinders, lifting devices, and tools before use.

- Maintain a clean and organized work area.

- Properly secure and handle steel and fabricated components.

- Follow proper rigging and crane safety procedures.

Required Skills

- Ability to read structural steel fabrication drawings.

- Understanding of welding symbols.

- Strong measuring and layout skills.

- Ability to calculate basic dimensions and angles.

- Ability to use tape measures, levels, squares, lasers, and layout tools.

- Welding experience.

- Ability to operate grinders and fabrication equipment safely.

- Ability to identify fit-up and dimensional problems.

- Ability to work independently from drawings and instructions.

- Strong attention to detail.

· Outdoor industrial sites with exposure to weather extremes.
