Senior Necropsy Technician

About the Role

The Senior Necropsy Technician plays a key role in the accurate, timely execution of pathology studies. This position performs complex necropsy and tissue collection procedures, helps coordinate study readiness, and maintains the quality of specimens, data, and documentation in accordance with study protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements. The Senior Technician also serves as a technical resource for the team and supports the development of less experienced technicians.

What You’ll Do Here

- Perform necropsies, gross examinations, organ weighing, bone marrow smear preparation, tissue trimming, decalcification, and tissue processing in accordance with study protocols and SOPs.
- Execute specialized procedures, including fetal reproductive necropsies and protocol-specific tissue collection and trimming.
- Review protocols for accuracy and operational feasibility; participate in protocol reviews and pre-necropsy planning meetings.
- Coordinate study setup and help ensure that supplies, equipment, workspaces, and documentation are ready for scheduled procedures.
- Record and review study data in the Electronic Data Capture System (EDCS), perform quality checks, and resolve or escalate discrepancies promptly.
- Prepare, heat-seal, label, and archive specimens and study materials while maintaining traceability.
- Train and guide technicians on core SOPs, technical procedures, documentation practices, and quality expectations.
- Develop the skills needed to serve as a Lead Study Technician and take on increasing responsibility for study execution.
- Maintain necropsy suites and other pathology laboratory areas, including instruments, equipment, and required facility records.
- Support chemical and waste management by maintaining stock and working solutions and following applicable handling procedures.
- Monitor inventory, order supplies, and keep work areas stocked for uninterrupted study operations.
- Participate in departmental meetings, ongoing GLP training, and the company’s on-call rotation.

What You Need to Succeed

- High school diploma and substantial relevant laboratory or necropsy experience; a bachelor’s degree in a biological science or related field is preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in necropsy procedures, specimen handling, and pathology or histology techniques.
- Working knowledge of anatomy and biological systems, with the ability to apply scientific math and basic bench chemistry.
- Experience following study protocols and SOPs, maintaining accurate records, and identifying data or specimen quality concerns.
- Proficiency with electronic data systems and Microsoft Office.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to solve problems during time-sensitive study work.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills in English and the ability to train and collaborate with colleagues across the laboratory.
