Position Purpose
The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing daily produce department operations, including merchandising, inventory management, customer service, food safety, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department achieves sales and profitability goals while maintaining exceptional standards for freshness, quality, and presentation.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations
- Assist in managing daily produce department operations to ensure product availability, freshness, and quality.
- Support implementation of merchandising plans, seasonal programs, and promotional displays.
- Ensure produce displays are attractive, abundant, and maintained according to company standards.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering to meet customer demand while minimizing shrink.
- Maintain department cleanliness, organization, and overall appearance.
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide leadership and direction to produce associates in the absence of the Produce Manager.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, and coaching department associates.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and a customer-focused culture.
- Support labor planning and scheduling to meet operational requirements.
- Ensure associates understand and comply with company policies and procedures.
Customer Service
- Deliver exceptional customer service and assist customers with product selection and inquiries.
- Educate customers regarding produce varieties, seasonality, storage, and preparation recommendations.
- Resolve customer concerns in a professional and timely manner.
- Promote a positive shopping experience that encourages customer loyalty.
Product Quality & Merchandising
- Ensure all produce products meet company standards for quality, freshness, and presentation.
- Monitor product rotation and inventory movement to reduce spoilage and shrink.
- Assist in building and maintaining impactful displays that maximize sales and customer appeal.
- Verify signage and pricing accuracy throughout the department.
Financial & Inventory Management
- Support achievement of department sales, gross profit, labor, and shrink goals.
- Assist with ordering, receiving, inventory control, and replenishment activities.
- Monitor product movement and assist with demand forecasting.
- Review department performance metrics and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and company operational standards.
- Maintain proper handling, storage, rotation, and display of products.
- Promote a safe work environment and adherence to all workplace safety requirements.
- Support department readiness for audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
