About this role

Role Overview

Overheard is launching Overheard Sports, and we're looking for a freelance Content Creator to help build it from day one. This person will ideate, write, produce, and publish daily static and short video content that covers the biggest moments in sports through a relatable, cultural, and entertainment-first lens. Think less box scores, more group chat: the viral sideline moment, the halftime show discourse, the athlete fit check, the fan who caught the foul ball with her beer, and the collective meltdown when a franchise does something inexplicable.

This is a write-it-and-make-it role: you'll own every post end to end, from the idea and the copy to the finished meme, graphic, or edit, working across written editorial, low-lift video, and supporting formats to launch the Overheard Sports feed and grow it into a go-to destination for people who love sports culture, including those who care more about the storylines than the stats. This is a freelance role ideal for someone who lives and breathes sports and internet culture, moves fast, and can turn any game-day moment into scroll-stopping, shareable content.

You'll collaborate closely with the Editor, Social Leads, and the broader Overheard team, helping shape the page's identity, contributing ideas in pitch meetings, building new formats, and upholding brand consistency across platforms.

Responsibilities

Launch + Grow the Page

- Help define the voice, content pillars, and visual identity of Overheard Sports ahead of and through launch.
- Build a consistent posting cadence that establishes the page as a daily, reliable source of sports culture content.
- Develop and test recurring formats and franchises that give audiences a reason to follow, return, and share.
- Track performance and iterate quickly, doubling down on what's working to drive follower growth, shares, and saves.

Publish Daily Sports Content

- Write and publish original, on-voice content for Overheard Sports every day, with a focus on shareability.
- Cover the big moments across major leagues and events (NFL, NBA, F1, WNBA, soccer, college sports, the Olympics, and more) through a cultural and comedic lens.
- Write sharp, witty, brand-aligned captions, headlines, copy, and scripts in the Overheard voice, tailored to sports and pop culture audiences.
- Move quickly on live and breaking moments during games, drafts, trades, awards shows, and tentpole events so the page is part of the conversation in real time.

Audience Insights + Strategy

- Identify what the Overheard Sports audience cares about: the athletes, teams, rivalries, storylines, and crossover moments that spark conversation.
- Monitor comments, trends, and platformance analytics to surface audience interests and turn those insights into content ideas.
- Spot emerging sports-culture conversations early, from athlete fashion and celebrity courtside sightings to fan behavior and viral memes.
- Share learnings with the Editor and Social team to inform content strategy and growth priorities.

Design + Production

- Fully produce the content you write, not just the copy: you'll take each post from idea to finished, ready-to-publish asset.
- Design memes, graphics, carousels, and text-based posts in Canva (or similar), keeping them clean, fast, and on-brand.
- Shoot, edit, and package low-lift short-form videos using an iPhone or consumer-grade equipment.
- Maintain a nimble, social-first production style that matches Overheard's pace and aesthetic.

Content Ideation + Development

- Bring fresh ideas to pitch meetings for editorial posts, video franchises, and comedic formats rooted in sports culture.
- Plan ahead for the sports calendar (season openers, playoffs, drafts, the Super Bowl, March Madness, and more) while staying flexible for the unexpected.

Brand + Voice Stewardship

- Uphold Overheard's tone, POV, aesthetics, and writing style across every asset.
- Stay on top of internet culture, trending humor formats, and sports discourse to keep the account relevant and timely.
- Partner with Creative, Social, and Editorial teams to support the launch, cross-promotion across the Overheard network, and content experiments.

Quality + Process

- Maintain high editorial standards for accuracy, clarity, and comedic alignment, including getting the sports details right.
- Stay organized across a fast-moving content pipeline and deliver on deadlines, including occasional evenings and weekends around key games and events.
- Contribute to evolving best practices and creative playbooks as Overheard Sports grows.

Qualifications

- 2–4 years of experience in editorial, social content creation, sports media, publishing, entertainment, or a similar creative field.
- Exceptional writing skills with a comedic sensibility, able to nail Overheard's specific voice (quick, sharp, observational, irreverent, but never try-hard).
- Deep familiarity with sports and sports culture across multiple leagues, plus the conversations female fans are having about them online.
- Experience launching or growing a social account is a strong plus; able to show examples of content or pages you've helped build.
- Proven ability to ideate and execute social-first content across Instagram and TikTok.
- Comfortable using analytics and audience signals to guide content decisions.
- Able to fully produce your own content: design memes, graphics, and carousels in Canva (or similar), and ideally able to shoot and edit video on iPhone or consumer-grade equipment. No formal design background needed, just a good eye and speed.
- Strong understanding of meme culture and internet trends, and how to translate big sports moments into content that people want to send to their friends.
- Highly organized, able to manage multiple content streams and hit deadlines independently, with flexibility to cover live events.
- Collaborative and communicative, excited to pitch, brainstorm, and build new formats.
- Bonus: familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or other lightweight video editing tools.

Engagement Details

- Freelance / permalance; hours and cadence to be scoped with the Editor based on content volume and the sports calendar.
- Remote-friendly. NYC preferred.
