The Department of American Studies is seeking a highly motivated, organized, creative, and engaging student to serve as the Marketing and Administrative Support intern for the 2026-2027 academic year. The intern will report to the Department Manager, Hayley Spear, and will assist with a variety of tasks related to the work of the department.  In addition to the job responsibilities outlined below, this position will be part of a structured internship experience through the Internship Placement Program (IPP). If selected, interns will participate in an asynchronous co-curricular workshop series through Canvas. Through this robust internship experience, students will receive dedicated career support from their supervisor and gain key skills and competencies that align with future job interests. The Federal Work Study Internship will look great on a resume and provide impactful stories to share in interviews. TFWS Internships are best suited for undergraduate students in their second to fourth years.

Core responsibilities include:

- Management of the department’s bulletin board, for aesthetically interesting engagement, with up-to-date information of departmental events.
- Regular review of AMST website, to update and refresh content.
- Marketing of American Studies events through various channels including the creation and distribution of flyers digitally and across Grounds.
- Drafting and revising of the American Studies newsletter.
- Support in planning and executing department events, such as the AMST end-of-year celebration and graduation ceremony (pending the intern’s availability in mid-May 2027.)
- Office administrative support – unboxing and managing office supplies.

Qualifications:

- Federal work study eligibility.

- Current UVA undergraduate student.

Desired skills:

- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

- Self-motivated with time-management skills.

- Proficiency with or willingness to learn Canva, Adobe, and Microsoft Office Suite including OneDrive and Excel.

- Experience generating written content for public audiences is a plus.

- Comfort with image production and editing for web use.

- Strong written communication and problem-solving skills.

- Interest in digital and print marketing, web operations, and emerging marketing technology.

- Interest in strengthening the American Studies student experience through support of departmental projects and events.

Students will work 1 – 10 hours a week.

Some aspects of this position can be completed remotely, but candidates should expect physical tasks that require work to be conducted in and around the office in Wilson Hall.

Job duration: September/October 2026 through May.

Compensation: $18/hr.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
