Job Summary

The Sustaining Lead Design Engineer is responsible for leading design execution for Sustaining Engineering programs and supporting product lifecycle activities across existing product platforms. This senior individual contributor role owns the technical quality, completeness, and timely release of models, drawings, BOMs (Bills of Materials), and related documentation. The Lead Design Engineer serves as the primary design point of contact for assigned sustaining initiatives and provides technical leadership to onsite and offshore design resources.

The role is hands-on, onsite, and focused on delivering robust, manufacturable solutions that support product maintenance, quality improvements, cost reduction initiatives, supplier transitions, production support activities, and regulatory or compliance updates. The position may also support New Product Development (NPD) programs and serves as a flexible technical resource capable of leading design execution across both sustaining and development environments.

In addition, this role serves as a backup Windchill Administrator, supporting PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system activities, user support, troubleshooting, process execution, and administrative functions as assigned.

This is a full-time, onsite position located in Charlotte, NC, operating on a standard Monday through Friday, day shift schedule.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead design execution for Sustaining Engineering programs, product improvement initiatives, cost reduction projects, supplier transitions, quality improvements, production support activities, and assigned NPD programs.
- Own technical integrity and consistency of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) models, drawings, BOMs (Bills of Materials), and configurations.
- Coordinate and drive Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), including scope definition, checklist completion, due diligence, and release sequencing.
- Resolve complex design and integration issues in collaboration with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Program teams.
- Provide day-to-day technical direction to onsite and offshore designers, including work assignments, review, and quality assurance.
- Ensure designs comply with engineering standards, drafting practices, Design Services procedures, and product development process requirements.
- Lead and participate in design reviews and cross-functional technical discussions.
- Track design progress and communicate status, risks, and issues to stakeholders.
- Support continuous improvement through lessons learned, best practices, and standard work adherence.
- Assemble documentation packages and produce drawing sets which are checked by an engineer.
- Serve as backup Windchill Administrator and support day-to-day PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system activities.
- Assist users with Windchill workflows, release processes, lifecycle management, and access-related issues.
- Support Windchill object management, data quality activities, and configuration maintenance.
- Support implementation and documentation of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) procedures, workflows, and best practices.
- Partner with Engineering, IT, and system administration resources to maintain effective PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) operations.
- Serve as a technical mentor for Creo and Windchill users by providing guidance, troubleshooting support, best practices, and user development.
- Provide technical and task leadership to onsite and offshore designers without direct administrative people-management responsibility.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Accountable for design quality, delivery, and execution for assigned sustaining engineering and NPD initiatives.

Required Qualifications

- High School Diploma or GED.
- 5+ years of product design experience in an engineering environment.
- 3+ years working knowledge of Windchill, PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) workflows, engineering release processes, and lifecycle management.
- 3+ years of Creo Parametric experience with demonstrated proficiency in 3D modeling, assembly management, drawing creation, and engineering documentation.
- 3+ years of experience supporting engineering release activities and ECN (Engineering Change Notice) execution.
- 3+ years of experience coordinating design activities across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain organizations.
- 3+ years of experience supporting Windchill administration activities, user support, PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) process execution, or similar system-support functions.
- 1+ years of experience providing technical mentorship, guidance, and user support for Creo and Windchill.
- Willing and able to work occasional evenings or early mornings based on global team needs and project requirements.
- Willing and able to travel up to 5% of the year for product support (US & Mexico).

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Technology.
- Proficiency with Creo for 3D modeling and drawing creation, including Windchill.
- Experience coordinating and reviewing work from offshore design resources.
- Experience serving as a Windchill Administrator, Product Administrator, Site Administrator, or similar PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) support role.
- Experience supporting Windchill workflows, lifecycle states, access controls, or release processes.
- Experience supporting user training, documentation, and process improvement initiatives.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability principles.
- Experience leading technical discussions and design reviews with multiple stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Experience in the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) industry.
- Industrial Machine Design experience.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Pay Range
The annual salary for this position is between $79,000.00 - $158,000.00 annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range include, but are not limited to, skills, education, experience, and other unique qualifications of the successful candidate. The pay range will not be below the minimum wage applicable to the jurisdiction in which the applicant is to be employed.

Other Compensation
This position may be entitled to short-term cash incentives, subject to plan requirements.
