Job Summary

Industrial Power Solutions, a Sundt Company, is seeking a Controls Technician to join our Field Controls Department. The Controls Technician provides hands on field installation and technical support for Process Control and Instrumentation Systems (PCIS) across industrial projects.

This position is expected to be fully proficient in the technical, communication, documentation, safety, and field coordination responsibilities required to support controls installation, testing, troubleshooting, startup, and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

• Install and terminate cables and conductors associated with industrial control and instrumentation systems.

• Perform loop checks and assist with system testing and verification.

• Configure and calibrate field equipment and instrumentation.

• Diagnose and troubleshoot control circuits and instrumentation issues.

• Provide technical support to controls programmers during installation, testing, and startup activities.

• Support equipment startup and assist with identifying and resolving field issues.

• Support demonstration testing and commissioning activities.

• Assist with system testing to verify equipment and controls are operating according to project requirements.

• Create and maintain accurate as-built documentation based on field conditions and completed work.

• Perform pre-construction field investigations and document existing conditions, findings, and required work.

• Coordinate with the Project Manager and jobsite Foreman or Superintendent regarding PCIS related issues, questions, scheduling, work progress, and project updates.

• Communicate regularly with the Field Controls Manager regarding project status, field conditions, questions, scheduling, and progress.

• Maintain professional communication with project teams, customers, vendors, and other stakeholders by phone, text, email, and in person.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while following all IPS safety and quality requirements.

Minimum Job Requirements

A Controls Technician must be fully proficient in the following areas:

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate professionally with Project Managers, Foremen, Superintendents, Field Controls Managers, customers, and other project personnel.

• Strong technical writing and communication skills, including professional communication by phone, text, and email.

• Ability to interpret, comprehend, modify, and redline P&ID diagrams, control circuit ladder diagrams, control circuit relay logic schematics, single line diagrams, conduit diagrams and schedules, electrical construction drawings, and control panel shop drawings.

• Basic proficiency with various programmable logic controller (PLC) platforms.

• Proper operation, care, scheduling of annual calibration, and general maintenance of an IPS issued Fluke 789 process meter.

• Strict adherence to lockout/tagout (LOTO) safety procedures.

• Strict adherence to and full compliance with all IPS Safety and Quality Assurance standards.

• Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with field and project management teams.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.

• Willingness to travel to project locations as required.

• Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with industrial Process Control and Instrumentation Systems.

• Experience with loop checks, equipment configuration, calibration, startup, or commissioning.

• Experience supporting PLC programmers or controls engineers.

• Experience with industrial manufacturing, water and wastewater, food processing, energy, mining, or other industrial environments.

• Experience documenting field conditions and preparing as built documentation.

• Formal training or education in electrical, controls, instrumentation, automation, or a related field.

• OSHA 30 certification.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work extended shifts in varying indoor and outdoor conditions.

• Ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, structural framework, and aerial lifts.

• Ability to work at heights and in elevated work areas.

• Ability to lift, push, and pull tools, equipment, and materials as required.

• Frequent use of hands for tools, wiring, instrumentation, and equipment.

• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and work in various positions.

• Ability to work in confined, cluttered, uneven, and industrial work areas.

• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
