JOB SUMMARY :

Position: Surgical Pathology Technician – “Grosser”

Hours: Monday-Friday 1:30 PM - 10:00 PM

The Surgical Pathology Technician – “Grosser” is responsible for performing grossing functions in compliance with Clin-Path Diagnostics’ company policies, regulatory requirements, and client requirements. The position works under the technical oversight of the Pathologist Assistant assigned to oversee grossing functions and reports to Histology Leadership.

The Surgical Pathology Technician performs grossing of surgical specimens ranging from low to moderate complexity and may assist with additional grossing, training, and departmental functions as assigned. The position requires knowledge of anatomy and pathology specimen dissection, the ability to understand complex work processes, and the ability to coordinate activities with other departments and clients.
This position may support several laboratory areas and functions, including:

- Grossing surgical specimens of low to moderate complexity
- Grossing specimens including GI biopsies, skin biopsies, ECC, EMC, sinus contents, tonsils, hernia sacs, hemorrhoids, small lipomas, breast cores, cytologies, fine needles, and bone marrows
- Grossing moderate-complexity specimens, including gallbladders and appendices, following appropriate training by Pathologist Assistants
- Assisting Pathologist Assistants with additional duties as necessary
- Assisting with training new Pathology Technicians as needed under the direction of the Lead Pathology Assistant
- Acting as a resource for Accessioning staff and assisting with questions
- Completing required annual competency
- Supporting additional duties related to higher-complexity specimens based on experience and level
- Assisting with maintaining regulatory requirements in the gross room, as applicable
- Assisting with CAP inspection preparation, as applicable
- Performing other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to:

- Grosses surgical specimens of low to moderate complexity according to established procedures and training.
- Performs grossing of specimens including GI biopsies, skin biopsies, ECC, EMC, sinus contents, tonsils, hernia sacs, hemorrhoids, small lipomas, breast cores, cytologies, fine needles, and bone marrows.
- Grosses moderate-complexity specimens, such as gallbladders and appendices, following appropriate training by Pathologist Assistants.
- Assists Pathologist Assistants with additional duties as necessary.
- Assists in training new Pathology Technicians under the direction of the Lead Pathology Assistant.
- Acts as a resource for Accessioning staff and assists with questions related to specimen processing and grossing functions.
- Completes required annual competency.
- Performs additional duties associated with higher-complexity specimens based on assigned level and experience.
- Assists with department or company projects as needed.
- Assists with maintaining regulatory requirements in the gross room, as assigned.
- Assists with CAP inspection preparation, as needed.
- Maintains effective communication with Histology Leadership, Pathologist Assistants, Accessioning staff, clients, and other departments as appropriate.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT :

- Must possess knowledge of anatomy and pathology specimen dissection.
- Must be able to understand complex work processes and coordinate activities with other departments and clients.
- Must have good communication skills and the ability to train employees.
- Must possess strong communication and diplomacy skills when interacting with clients.
- Must be competent with Microsoft Outlook and the anatomic pathology platforms utilized at CPD.
- Must follow all applicable safety procedures when performing grossing and working with surgical specimens and sharp instruments.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

None.

The position may assist with training new Pathology Technicians under the direction of the Lead Pathology Assistant. Lead-level responsibilities may include serving as the primary trainer for new Pathology Technicians and providing additional support to Accessioning staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

- Associate’s degree in a laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Technology; OR
- Education/training equivalent to the above, including at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, with:

24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory Technology courses; OR
- 24 semester hours of science courses, including 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

- Level I: 3 years or less of relevant work experience.
- Level II: 4–7 years of relevant work experience.
- Level III/Lead: 8+ years of relevant work experience or equivalent training, plus the ability to self-direct and complete the essential functions of a Level III or Lead position.
- Experience level is determined at the discretion of the Administrative Director.
