Role overview of our Project Systems Architect

This is a new role with significant responsibilities. We are seeking an experienced Project Systems Architect  who will be a "key" colleague and responsible for the overarching design technical architecture and engineering solutions within Project Delivery.

You will take a holistic view of the complete solution, ensuring that individual systems, subsystems and infrastructure components work together as an integrated whole. You will establish and maintain technical governance, understand dependencies and interfaces, and ensure that the implications of subsystem design and performance are identified and addressed from the outset

These are complex, real-world programmes in which requirements, constraints and circumstances can evolve throughout delivery. The Project System Architect must therefore be able to anticipate the consequences of change, assess technical and programme-level trade-offs, and ensure that decisions continue to protect overall system performance, resilience, cost and schedule.

A key aspect of the role is to provide technical direction, architectural governance and design authority across all engineering and technical disciplines working with engineers, ICP (In-Country Partner) and third party vendors to ensure all technical interaction is accounted for.

The role will involve significant cross-functional and cross-departmental engagement to establish and maintain SRT 's engineering reference architectures, technical standards, design principles and architectural governance. This will require close collaboration with Systems Development, Product Management, Project Engineering, Delivery and Support to ensure that architectural decisions are consistently applied throughout the product and project lifecycle.

The role will also act as a senior technical authority for cross-disciplinary engineering decisions, providing assurance and sign-off where required and ensuring that solutions are technically robust, maintainable, scalable and capable of being deployed consistently across SRT 's programmes and products.

The role of Project Systems Architect  role is based from our  Bristol  office with flexibility for Hybrid working.  This role will also require occasional overseas travel as required by the business

Responsibilities - Project Systems Architect  (not exhaustive):

- Provide significant technical leadership and support to the Project Engineering Manager, acting as a senior technical decision-maker and design authority within the Project Engineering function

- Work closely with the Global Engineering Lead during the handover of system designs into Project Engineering, ensuring that designs consider practical field deployment, installation, commissioning, maintainability and operational requirements

- Ensure that individual engineering disciplines are developed as part of a single integrated solution, rather than operating as independent technical silos, ensuring appropriate interfaces and dependencies are defined and managed

- Define and maintain architectural principles, design patterns and reference architectures that provide a consistent and reusable approach across projects and programmes

- Provide technical direction where architectural decisions cross multiple engineering disciplines, ensuring that the overall solution remains coherent and aligned with SRT 's engineering strategy

- Act as the senior engineering escalation point for complex architectural and cross-disciplinary technical issues, providing recommendations and decisions where issues cannot be resolved within individual engineering workstreams

- Own and maintain the architectural governance process, including design reviews, technical deviations, design standards, technical risk, interface management and architectural decision-making.

- Chair technical design reviews for significant or complex solutions where appropriate

- Ensure engineering solutions are designed with operationalisation, standardisation and re-use in mind, identifying opportunities to develop repeatable architectures, designs and engineering solutions that can be deployed across multiple projects

- Establish and maintain the appropriate division of design responsibility between  and ICP, ensuring that design ownership, technical responsibilities, interfaces and deliverables are clearly defined while maintaining overall architectural integrity

- Provide forward-looking technical direction, ensuring that current project engineering designs consider future project requirements, technology adoption, scalability, obsolescence and opportunities for re-use

- Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to Design Engineers, Engineering Leads and Subject Matter Experts, supporting the development of engineering capability and consistency across the team

- Support the Project Engineering Manager in establishing engineering priorities and technical strategy, providing technical insight into resource requirements, engineering risks, design maturity and areas requiring additional technical capability

Skills & Experience – Project Systems Architect (not exhaustive):

- Ideally you will have attained a relevant role related degree, but we are also open to applications of extremely experienced candidates

- Extensive engineering design and architecture experience, ideally within complex, multi-disciplinary technical environments

- Strong systems-thinking capability, with the ability to understand how physical engineering, systems, networks, data centres, communications and infrastructure interact as a complete solution

- Proven experience in developing and governing engineering architectures, reference designs, design standards and technical design principles

- Strong technical decision-making skills, with the confidence to make and defend architectural decisions where there are competing technical or commercial considerations

- Strong design review and technical assurance experience, including the ability to identify design weaknesses, technical risks, integration issues and single points of failure

- Excellent interface management skills, particularly where responsibility crosses engineering teams, departments, suppliers or external engineering partners

- Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, project teams, senior management, customers and non-technical stakeholders

- Ability to influence without direct line-management authority, working effectively through Engineering Leads, Design Engineers and Subject Matter Experts
