About this role

The Compliance Analyst sits in Marcura's Compliance team and carries out first line financial crime checks across the Group's regulated and unregulated business units. The Analyst onboards and reviews customers and counterparties, screens customers, counterparties, payments, vessels and cargo at onboarding and on an ongoing basis, works transaction monitoring alerts, investigates card and transfer fraud and answers information requests from our banking partners. Every decision is made in line with Marcura policy and procedure and is written up clearly on the case file. Where the Analyst knows or suspects money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions evasion or fraud, they report it to the MLRO.

Key Responsibilities

- Complete KYC and KYB checks on customers and counterparties at onboarding and at periodic review. This covers identity, beneficial ownership, source of funds and nature of business, with enhanced due diligence for higher risk relationships and PEPs.
- Screen customers, counterparties, payments, vessels and cargo against sanctions, PEP and adverse media lists, both at onboarding and through ongoing screening. Clear false positives with a written reason, and hold any payment linked to a possible match, a sanctioned port, controlled or dual-use goods, or an unexplained change in vessel ownership, flag or tracking until it is resolved.
- Review transaction monitoring alerts within agreed timeframes, comparing activity with what we know about the customer and recording the outcome and reasoning for each alert.
- Investigate reported card and transfer fraud, including account takeover and authorised push payment (APP) scams, in line with investigation processes. Complete fraud reports, apply refund sign-off limits and support chargebacks and recovery of funds.
- Respond to requests for information from our banking partners accurately and by the deadline given, checking each response against the customer file and flagging any request that raises a wider concern.
- Report any knowledge or suspicion of money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions breaches to the MLRO straight away through an internal suspicious activity report, without tipping off the customer or anyone else.
- Maintain accurate records of all checks, screening decisions, alert outcomes and investigations in the case management system, kept for at least five years after the customer relationship ends.
- Support the team by spotting new fraud and financial crime patterns, recurring false positives and gaps in our checks, and raising them with management.

Requirements

- Degree in finance, law, business or a related subject preferred. Relevant experience in a regulated financial services firm will also be considered.
- ICA, ACAMS or an equivalent financial crime qualification preferred.
- 3 to 5 years in a financial crime role covering KYC/KYB, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring or fraud is desirable. Experience in a firm regulated in the UK, Portugal or elsewhere in Europe is also desirable but not required.
- Payments, e-money, banking or fintech preferred. Maritime, shipping or cross-border payments experience is a plus.
- Good attention to detail, sound judgement, clear written communication, an enquiring mind, discretion and the ability to manage a workload against deadlines.
