The Phlebotomist II supports a busy clinical practice by performing high-quality specimen collection and handling, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. This role focuses on accurate blood draws and specimen processing while ensuring patient comfort, safety, and compliance with established procedures and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques and assist with training as needed.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling them per protocol.
- Follow different specimen handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as required.
- Update patient information and ensure accurate documentation in the appropriate systems.
- Understand and fully comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety and specimen handling.
- Attend annual department trainings and stay current with updated procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and accurate manner.
- Contribute to workflow improvement by identifying issues and making recommendations to enhance efficiency and quality.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by local regulations.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 24 years of overall experience in a clinical or related healthcare environment.
- Proficiency in venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to perform glucose testing and other routine specimen collection procedures.
- Strong attention to detail in labeling, matching requisitions, and verifying orders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, data entry, and communication.
- Ability to understand and follow physicians orders and laboratory protocols.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with safety and regulatory standards.
- High School Diploma or GED.

Work Environment
This position is based in a family practice setting with a clinical environment focused on patient care and diagnostic services. The work schedule typically runs from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., supporting steady patient flow throughout the day. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as computers and Microsoft Office applications for documentation and communication. The role involves close collaboration with clinical staff and requires adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory protocols to maintain a clean and compliant workplace. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a medical practice is expected.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mount Olive, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
