Job Summary
At this time, only current PSEG employees are being considered.
Serve as the overarching functional, process, and program lead for safety across Electric Transmission & Distribution (T&D), while partnering with peer organizations across the Utility, including Gas, Customer Operations, UOS, Utility Safety and other Lines of Business (LOBs). Provide leadership and representation at the Enterprise level, coordinating with Corporate Health & Safety, Medical, PSEG-LI, Power, and other key stakeholders.
Serve as the Electric lead for Utility-wide safety initiatives, including Serious Injury Prevention, Job Site Engagement, Contractor Safety, Hazard Recognition, and Human and Organizational Performance (HOP). Drive strategic safety culture change and change management using leading and lagging indicators, analytics, benchmarking, and industry best practices to identify opportunities and implement actionable improvements.
Partner with Electric T&D management to serve as a conduit for executing Senior Leadership's vision, strategies, programs, and initiatives. Lead efforts to assess and advance safety culture, programs, processes, and performance across the organization.
Oversee compliance with corporate and regulatory safety requirements, including safety reporting, incident management, investigations, corrective actions, and performance measures. Direct staff and Safety Program Managers in day-to-day activities to promote regulatory compliance, operational support, effective reporting, and a safe working environment.
Lead and develop the Electric T&D Safety Team, including Program Managers, Safety Coordinators, and union safety leaders, to ensure effective administration of safety plans and programs. Develop staff in job knowledge, leadership, and professionalism and foster a culture of engagement, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Work location may be flexible based on business needs, office space, and geographic availability.
Respond to field safety emergencies and significant incidents on a 24/7/365 basis, as required.
As an employee of PSE&G, during storm/outage restoration efforts, may be required to perform functions different from normal operations and the regular work schedule. May also be required to work in an alternate location.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead cultural and behavioral change across Electric T&D to continuously improve safety performance, employee well-being, and overall results.
- Develop, direct, implement, and evaluate safety and health strategies and programs ensuring work is conducted safely and occupational health and safety hazards are effectively identified, minimized, and controlled.
- Assess safety programs, processes, trends, incidents, and performance data to identify gaps, establish priorities, and drive measurable improvements.
- Lead and support key safety initiatives, including Serious Injury Prevention, Job Site Engagement, Contractor Safety, Hazard Recognition, and Human and Organizational Performance.
- Lead the Company's transition to the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Serious Injury Prevention model, including implementation and management of associated performance measures.
- Participate in the Company's Serious Injury Prevention Committee and related initiatives focused on targeted safety risk areas.
- Partner with Corporate Health & Safety and Utility Safety to align Electric T&D programs with Enterprise and Utility strategies and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, including OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and other federal and state requirements.
- Coordinate with Bargaining Unit leadership, including Electric, Gas, and Customer Care, and partner with Labor Relations and safety and health professionals to integrate safety processes into work activities and maintain a safe working environment.
- Participate in and provide leadership to Utility-wide and Corporate Safety Councils.
- Represent the Company in external industry organizations, including Edison Electric Institute (EEI), and participate in relevant committees and peer benchmarking activities to identify and implement best practices.
- Oversee safety incident reporting, investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and follow-up. Provide guidance to field supervision, management, Safety Coordinators, and staff during safety emergencies to ensure first response, recovery, investigation, and follow-up comply with internal policies and external regulations.
- Foster excellence across the Electric T&D Safety Team and ensure local and LOB safety plans and programs are effectively administered. Develop staff capabilities in safety knowledge, leadership, and professionalism.
- Maintain and apply working knowledge of PSEG Standards for Business Controls and meet management expectations for effective internal controls.
- Provide safety leadership and accountability across Electric Operations and Projects & Construction, as applicable.
- Requires regular non-overnight travel to PSE&G facilities, work locations, and field sites.
Job Specific Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering or related major and 10 years of field safety experience in a utility, power or construction environment with a bargaining unit workforce.
- In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, at least 14 years of relevant field safety experience in a utility, power, or construction environment.
- At least 5 years of experience in a management/leadership role.
- Demonstrated capabilities in performing root-cause analyses and safety incident investigations, along with vetting of conclusions and recommendations and action plans.
- Ability to respond to safety emergencies -- 24/7 365 days/year -- reported by the field to support 1st
- Demonstrated ability to lead and support response, recovery, and follow-up investigations for field safety emergencies.
- Strong leadership, analytical, teamwork, managerial, and communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable federal and state safety laws, regulations, standards, and industry guidelines, including OSHA, ANSI, ASTM, and NFPA.
- Demonstrated experience interpreting and implementing regulatory safety standards and industry requirements.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and analytical skills, including experience preparing executive-level summaries and presentations.
- Must possess and maintain a valid US Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Desired
- Master’s degree in management or advanced degree in the area of Health and Safety, or a related discipline.
- One or more relevant professional certifications, such as CSP, ASP, CIH, OSHT, or CUSA.
- Active participation in industrial or utility safety organizations and peer groups, such as EEI, AGA, or similar industry organizations.
- Experience benchmarking safety programs and performance against peer utilities and industry best practices.
- Experience developing and delivering safety presentations, training, and executive-level communications.
