The Chief provides strategic leadership for Florida’s statewide Radiation Control Program, overseeing multidisciplinary teams dedicated to protecting residents and visitors from unnecessary radiation exposure. The Bureau’s programs regulate radioactive materials not under U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission jurisdiction, oversee radiologic technologist certification and continuing education, regulate x-ray and other radiation-producing equipment, coordinate radiological emergency response activities, conduct environmental radiation monitoring and studies, perform radiochemical analyses, and regulate nonionizing radiation users, as appropriate. Through these programs, the Chief directs one of Florida’s most comprehensive public health regulatory and emergency preparedness operations.

This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

The Chief provides executive leadership and oversight for a statewide workforce of 94 employees, including five section administrators, and directs all radiation control programs and functions, including:

· Regulation of radioactive materials (non-NRC jurisdiction)

· Oversight of x ray and radiation producing machines statewide

· Radiologic technologist continuing education and certification support

· Environmental Radiation Monitoring and radiochemical analysis

· Emergency response to radiological incidents

· Oversight of non-ionizing radiation programs

· Interagency coordination with NRC, FDA, EPA, and other states

· Legislative budget requests, program planning, and policy development

· Program modernization, QA/QC systems, and performance evaluation

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

This position is in compliance with and monitors compliance (when applicable) with the mandatory requirements in Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 69I-24.001, Florida Administrative Code. Serves as the supervisor for contract managers and monitors compliance with the mandatory requirements in Sections 287.057(16) and 215.422, Florida Statutes.

Assigned purchasing card responsibilities. This position is responsible for the preparation of purchasing and the approval of purchasing.

Assigned responsibility for control of department assets.

Serves as the supervisor for the property custodian/delegate and monitors compliance or mandatory requirements in Sections 273 and 274.11, Florida Statutes.

Qualifications:

Minimum - 5 years of Program Management experience. 5 years of supervisory experience

Preferred - 5 years of radiological health or health physics experience. Bachelor’s degree in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, or physical science

Travel Time- 1-25%
