Overview <div dir="ltr">The Windows + Devices Fundamentals team improves the reliability, performance, responsiveness, battery life, memory efficiency, and overall health of Windows devices. We build and operate the services, telemetry systems, and data pipelines that transform signals from labs and the installed base into trustworthy metrics, actionable diagnostics, and measurable engineering improvements.We are seeking a self-driven Software Engineer II to design and deliver data-driven systems that reveal how Windows devices behave at scale. You will independently own well-scoped backend services and data pipelines, investigate product-health signals, and deliver improvements that advance Windows Fundamentals across devices, silicon, and customer segments.Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.</div> Responsibilities <ul><li>Define and implement well-scoped Windows Fundamentals metrics, queries, cohort strategies, and measurement workflows across reliability, performance, responsiveness, power, battery life, memory, and storage.</li><li>Design, build, deploy, and operate reliable backend services and data pipelines for telemetry ingestion, transformation, orchestration, storage, health monitoring, diagnostics, and engineering workflows.</li><li>Apply and improve engineering practices for service reliability, security, compliance, observability, data quality, schema evolution, deployment safety, incident response, and operational support.</li><li>Analyze large-scale telemetry, diagnostic signals, and traces to identify trends, anomalies, regressions, causal factors, and customer impact.</li><li>Independently investigate metric movements and service issues using statistical methods, experimentation, debugging, and performance-analysis tools; translate findings into well-scoped engineering actions.</li><li>Design and deliver automation, AI-assisted analysis, dashboards, alerts, and diagnostic workflows that detect issues earlier and reduce manual engineering effort.</li><li>Contribute to technical designs and code reviews, resolve dependencies with partner teams, share findings, and mentor less-experienced engineers on well-understood areas.</li></ul> Qualifications Required/Minimum Qualifications:<ul><li>Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.<ul style="list-style-type: circle;"><li>OR equivalent experience.</li></ul></li></ul>Additional or preferred qualificationsOther Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:<ul><li>Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. </li></ul>Preferred Qualifications:<ul><li>Candidates need at least three years of software engineering experience. A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience, is also required.</li><li>At least one year of experience in backend service development, data engineering, distributed systems, large-scale analytics, systems analysis, or related work.</li><li>Experience developing, testing, deploying, or operating reliable production software, services, data pipelines, telemetry systems, or analytics.</li><li>Solid programming, debugging, software-design, data-analysis, and problem-solving skills; ability to independently execute well-scoped work, navigate partial ambiguity, and use evidence to guide decisions.</li><li>Experience with distributed services, Azure or other cloud platforms, data pipelines, operating systems, performance engineering, or large-scale fleet analytics.</li><li>Experience defining metrics, establishing baselines and cohorts, investigating regressions, and communicating insights through dashboards or technical reports.</li><li>Experience with telemetry schemas, service APIs, orchestration, monitoring and alerting, data-quality controls, anomaly detection, or automated diagnostic workflows.</li><li>Experience with Kusto, Azure data platforms, privacy-conscious telemetry, statistical analysis, machine learning, AI-assisted engineering workflows, or Windows internals.</li><li>C, C++, C#, Python, PowerShell, and SQL/KQL; WinDbg, Windows Performance Analyzer, and ETW; Kusto, Azure services and data platforms, orchestration and monitoring systems, Power BI, statistics, experimentation, anomaly detection, machine learning, and AI-assisted analysis.</li></ul> #W+DJOBS#WSSIJOBS#WDJOBS This position will be open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. <hr> Microsoft is an equal opportunity employer.
