Job Summary
The Sales Engineering Specialist supports the sales process by providing technical expertise and helping customers understand how products meet their needs. This role bridges the gap between engineering and sales, ensuring technical accuracy and customer satisfaction.
This job profile is intended for professionals who apply advanced knowledge of a job area. Required to manage projects / processes independently with limited supervision. Typically coaches and reviews the work of lower level professionals.
Essential Functions:
- Work with Regional Sales Managers to develop local strategies and initiatives to drive business development. The Product Manager is responsible for overall business development, but is not responsible for managing distributors and does not have individual account responsibility.
- Work with the Sales Channel providing technical support on key sales opportunities, technical support and risk assessment on complex applications, and training on products and tools.
- Work with marketing to develop marketing plans, campaigns, and messaging, develop marketing material such as brochures and presentations, publish case studies, publish technical papers and articles, coordinate local launch activities, and assure catalog data, sales tools, and pricing tools are up-to-date, accurate, and deployed.
- Monitor and document local market and technology trends as well as local competition with respect to market performance, product portfolio, and product performance identifying strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats (SWOT). Identify areas of development needed to improve competitive position and communicate to Global Product Management to help drive product development in support of local needs.
- Champion product and brand visibility in the marketplace by proactively participating in industry technical meetings, conferences, workshops, trade shows, and association events.
- Monitor and document local product financial performance metrics such as inquiries, orders, hit-rates, sales, and profitability - accountable for product line financial performance.
- Support engineering teams during the applications, sales, and order fulfilment phases to assure products are properly specified and applied - accountable for product line technical performance.
- Provide technical support during startups and service, proactively providing leadership to assure technical problems are quickly resolved.
- Monitor product quality and work with engineering, operations, and Global Product Management to resolve and prevent quality related issues.

Qualifications:
- B.S. Engineering, or equivalent, preferably Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil. Professional Engineer license is desirable, but not a must.
- Must have significant experience working in the US water and wastewater equipment industry with a strong overall knowledge of treatment equipment, and systems.
- Must have a broad understanding of general engineering principles, especially treatment process, with an understanding of design principles for assigned products. Direct experience working with treatment equipment and systems is preferred.
- Must have a solid understanding of sales and marketing processes in the US water and wastewater treatment equipment industry.
- Must have senior level competence reading, understanding, developing, and influencing engineering plans and specifications.
- Must be a strategic thinker, with strong analytical, business, and marketing skills.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability and desire to create and conduct effective presentations to customers, engineering firms, the sales channel, and other industry professionals during sales calls, sales meetings, training seminars, and trade shows.
- Must be a highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of regional and global teams.
- Must be computer literate with proficiency in MS Office suite.
Physical Requirements:
- Work is generally performed in office environments, but visits to treatment plants and construction sites may be necessary.
- Significant domestic travel required to other Sulzer sites, distributors, customers, and trade shows. Travel requirement is in the range of 25-40%.
