Distribution Designer

Position summary

Sparus Technical Services, LLC is seeking a Distribution Designer to support electric utility distribution projects from initial field assessment through completed design. This position is responsible for developing accurate, constructible distribution designs while following utility standards, engineering requirements, safety practices, and project timelines.

The Distribution Designer will work closely with utility clients, project managers, engineers, field personnel, permitting agencies, and other project stakeholders to develop overhead and underground distribution designs for new construction, system upgrades, relocations, and maintenance projects.

Key responsibilities

- Develop overhead and underground electric distribution designs in accordance with client standards, specifications, and applicable codes.
- Prepare design packages, construction drawings, sketches, material lists, cost estimates, and supporting project documentation.
- Review field data, maps, photographs, utility records, and existing infrastructure to determine appropriate design solutions.
- Perform or support field visits to collect measurements, identify existing facilities, document site conditions, and verify design requirements.
- Design new services, line extensions, system improvements, equipment replacements, relocations, and other distribution projects.
- Determine pole locations, conductor sizes, equipment requirements, clearances, and other design elements based on utility standards.
- Coordinate with customers, municipalities, utility representatives, contractors, and internal project teams as needed.
- Identify potential right-of-way, easement, permitting, environmental, or constructability concerns and escalate issues when appropriate.
- Maintain accurate project records and update work management, GIS, or design systems as required.
- Complete assigned projects within established quality, budget, and schedule expectations.
- Review completed designs for accuracy and compliance before submission.
- Respond to design revisions, field changes, and client feedback in a timely manner.
- Follow company and client safety policies while working in office and field environments.

Qualifications

- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree, technical degree, or related utility training preferred.
- Previous experience in electric utility distribution design, engineering, construction, or a related technical field preferred.
- Knowledge of overhead and underground electric distribution systems.
- Ability to read and interpret utility maps, engineering drawings, construction prints, specifications, and field documentation.
- Experience with utility design, GIS, CAD, work management, or mapping software is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with project teams and utility clients.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as required.

Preferred experience

Experience with one or more of the following is preferred:

- Electric utility distribution design
- Overhead and underground distribution systems
- Pole loading or clearance analysis
- Joint-use or make-ready design
- GIS mapping systems
- AutoCAD or similar design software
- Utility work management systems
- Construction estimating and material identification
- Permitting and right-of-way coordination
- Utility field data collection

Work environment

This position may include a combination of office and field work. Field assignments may require walking over uneven terrain, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, traveling to utility facilities or project sites, and working near active roadways or electrical infrastructure.
