What You Will Do:
The Clinical Documentation Integrity Supervisor supports the CDI Manager in overseeing day-to-day operations for Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists and CDI team lead assigned to client engagements. This role helps ensure consistent program coverage, effective team performance, and alignment with contractual expectations and CDI best-practice standards.
The CDI Supervisor manages daily CDI assignments, makes staffing adjustments to support adequate coverage, and monitors productivity, utilization, compliance, key performance indicators, and monthly quality audits. This role also ensures the CDI team has the tools, resources, and guidance needed to complete concurrent record reviews and initiate and follow up on provider queries.
The CDI Supervisor collaborates with facility CDI teams, client stakeholders, and internal leadership to support efficient CDI operations, effective technology use, policy and procedure updates, and timely escalation of program needs or risks.
Essential Job Functions
- Provide expert oversight and leadership for Clinical Documentation Integrity team operations.
- Assess and identify health system opportunities related to contractual requirements, CDI best-practice metrics, and program performance.
- Support the development and implementation of processes and initiatives designed to improve clinical documentation performance.
- Apply strong project management skills to coordinate priorities, track progress, and support successful execution of CDI initiatives.
- Communicate effectively and collaborate with medical staff, clinical departments, and key facility leadership team members as needed.
- Maintain and demonstrate strong knowledge of CDI and coding process best practices.
- Drive optimal use of CDI technology tools, dashboards, and reporting capabilities.
- Ensure CDI team accountability for key performance indicators and quality expectations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead by example and promote teamwork by fostering a positive, transparent, and focused work environment.
- Cultivate strong working relationships with facility leadership, including HIM, Coding, Case Management, Quality, Medical Staff, and other key stakeholders.
- Provide daily CDI program oversight, including productivity, quality, education, training, auditing, reporting, performance improvement, and standardization of practices, processes, policies, and procedures.
- Advocate for the CDI best-practice model by supporting accurate documentation, coded data integrity, reporting, provider profiling, and acuity capture.
- Support CDI technology implementation, optimization, data entry, reporting, and tracking processes.
- Maintain current knowledge of coding guidelines, DRG payer groups, clinical documentation trends, and quality and safety measures.
- Communicates program updates, risks, and needs to the CDI Manager and/or Director in a timely manner, while actively supporting issue resolution and risk mitigation.
- Build strong, trust-based relationships with client staff, physicians, and internal team members.
- Assist with interviews, new-employee onboarding, and training support.
- Conduct quarterly check-ins and year-end performance evaluations.
- Approve timesheets and monitor project utilization tracking.
- Provide regular status updates to operations leadership, the CDI Manager and/or Director, and facility department leaders.
- Facilitate meetings, discussions, and work sessions in a clear, organized, and collaborative manner.
- Demonstrate effective listening skills and respond thoughtfully to team, client, and stakeholder needs.
- Identify and clearly communicate project obstacles, risks, and issues while collaborating on practical solutions.
- Communicate confidently and professionally in individual, team, and group settings.
- Identify technology interface or reporting issues, submit vendor service tickets, and collaborate with vendor support, facility IT, and internal IT teams to resolve issues.
- Maintain current working knowledge of Coding Clinic Guidelines and federal updates to MS-DRG and APR-DRG systems.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and disease processes.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate tactfully and effectively.
- Ability to engage physicians professionally in complex or sensitive documentation discussions.
- Ability to conduct presentations for facility physicians and leadership.
- Maintain flexibility in work schedule to meet client, team, and business needs.
- Maintain a HIPAA-compliant remote workstation or office environment.
- Work in a remote, professional office setting with regular use of virtual communication and collaboration tools.
What You Will Need:
- Must hold at least one of the following credentials: RHIA, RHIT, RN, MD, or MD-equivalent clinical credentials.
- Must maintain required credentials and certifications throughout employment.
- Minimum of 5 years of acute care hospital CDI experience required.
- Minimum 2 years of prior management or supervisory experience required.
- Familiarity with encoder use and DRG assignment, including MS-DRG and APR-DRG methodologies.
What Would Be Nice to Have:
- CCDS or CDIP certification
- Strong clinical understanding of disease processes.

The annual salary range for this position is $89,000.00-$148,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
