Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Manager, Fire Protection to lead the growth and delivery of its Fire Protection and Life Safety practice in Central and Western Canada. This is a high-impact opportunity for an established technical and people leader who wants to shape a growing team, influence major projects, and connect local clients with a national and global network of specialists.

The role blends technical leadership, business development, project delivery, and people management. You will remain close to meaningful engineering work while building trusted client relationships, developing professionals, and expanding capabilities across buildings, transportation, defence, energy, industrial, and other complex infrastructure markets.

Your role

Market Development and Client Leadership:

- Lead and support the development of priority markets for the Western and Central Canada Fire Protection practice.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients, partners, and key stakeholders; participate in Key Account Management activities where appropriate.
- Contribute to a strong pipeline of opportunities through market intelligence, client engagement, and coordinated pursuit planning.
- Represent the mechanical practice in client meetings, industry activities, and strategic discussions.
- Identify opportunities to expand services with existing clients and establish relationships with new clients across relevant building and infrastructure markets.

Business Development and Proposals:

- Lead or support the preparation of proposals, including win strategy, scope definition, staffing, fee development, schedule, and technical approach.
- Coordinate input from technical specialists, project managers, market leaders, and other disciplines.
- Ensure proposals are responsive to client expectations and aligned with internal quality and commercial requirements.
- Participate in interviews, presentations, and negotiation activities for strategic pursuits.
- Maintain continuity from pursuit through project start-up to support successful delivery.

Team Leadership and Development:

- Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and direction to engineers, designers, and technical staff.
- Plan workload and coordinate resources in collaboration with project and regional leaders.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, retention, succession planning, and development of team members.
- Establish clear expectations, provide timely feedback, and contribute to performance and career-development discussions.
- Create an inclusive, collaborative environment that promotes accountability, knowledge sharing, and technical growth.

Technical and Project Leadership:

- Serve as Project Manager, Regional Fire Protection Lead, Design Engineer, or senior technical advisor on complex fire protection and multidisciplinary assignments.
- Provide technical oversight for active and passive fire protection systems, fire alarm and emergency communication systems, suppression and special-hazard systems, fire-water infrastructure, smoke control, egress and life-safety strategies, fire hazard assessments, and code-compliance or performance-based solutions.
- Guide teams from concept and detailed design through construction support, field review, integrated systems testing, commissioning, and project closeout.
- Lead code and standards interpretation and engagement with clients, contractors, regulators, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction, including application of Canadian building and fire codes, NFPA standards, and relevant ULC standards.
- Review calculations, drawings, specifications, technical reports, system narratives, cause-and-effect documentation, and other deliverables for technical quality and constructability.

Operational and Commercial Performance:

- Promote disciplined project delivery with attention to scope, schedule, budget, risk, quality, and client commitments.
- Support staffing forecasts, utilization planning, and matching resources to project needs.
- Monitor the health of assignments under the Manager’s responsibility and support corrective actions when required.
- Contribute to business planning, market priorities, and operational improvement initiatives for the Central and Western Canada team.
- Balance market-facing, project-delivery, and people-leadership responsibilities in line with practice priorities.

Cross-Regional Collaboration:

- Collaborate with M&E teams across Canada to share expertise, harmonize technical practices, and deploy resources effectively.
- Connect fire protection pursuits and projects with national subject-matter experts and delivery capabilities.
- Contribute to a strong national technical community and consistent client experience.
- Support opportunities involving multiple regions, disciplines, or market sectors.

Role Focus:

- Practice growth, technical leadership, client development, team leadership, and project delivery.

Work Model:

- Hybrid, with office, client, and project-site engagement as required.

About you

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, diploma in Fire Protection Engineering, or another closely related engineering discipline; a relevant graduate degree is an asset.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration, or eligibility; industry certification is an asset.
- Typically 10 or more years of fire protection, life safety, or closely related consulting experience, including experience leading people, projects, or a technical practice.
- Experience delivering projects across one or more complex sectors such as transportation, defence, energy or nuclear, industrial, healthcare, institutional, commercial, mission-critical, or life sciences.
- Demonstrated expertise in: Fire protection system design.
- Fire alarm and detection systems.
- Suppression and special-hazard systems.
- Fire and life-safety code consulting.
- Fire hazard or risk assessment.
- Performance-based design.
- Commissioning or integrated systems testing.
- Construction-phase services.

- Strong working knowledge of Canadian and Provincial building and fire codes, NFPA standards, and relevant ULC standards; experience working with Authorities Having Jurisdiction is required.
- Proven success leading and developing engineers, designers, and technical specialists, including workload planning, coaching, performance feedback, recruitment, and succession planning.
- Demonstrated client-facing credibility and commercial acumen, including relationship development, opportunity identification, proposal leadership, scope and fee development, negotiation, and delivery oversight.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, sound judgment, collaborative leadership, and organizational skills, with the ability to travel to client and project locations as required.

Expected compensation for this role is between $124,000 - $170,000 annually. Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.
