About this role
Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.
Role Summary: The Senior Software Engineer will craft high-quality, modern web interfaces that directly support clinical workflows and enhance the user experience across key healthcare applications. This hybrid role is based in Boston, MA, and is focused primarily on building scalable, maintainable frontend systems using the latest React and TypeScript patterns. This position reports to a Principal Member of Technical Staff.
Team Summary: The Clinicals Front End Rearchitecture Initiative is an engineering-led effort to replace a fragmented set of frontend architectures across Clinicals applications with a single, modern, React-based foundation. Today, these applications are built on a mix of technologies and patterns that create friction for both developers and users — this initiative is designed to resolve that by establishing one consistent, performant, and scalable frontend platform.
A significant part of this effort involves standardizing how frontend applications access data, replacing the current home-grown Data Broker with GraphQL to create cleaner, more predictable data patterns. The team is also focused on building a shared library of reusable components and establishing frontend conventions that other teams across Clinicals can adopt. Node.js plays a supporting role in tooling, build pipelines, and lightweight service layers that complement the frontend stack.
The result will be a unified, developer-friendly platform that reduces complexity, improves application performance, and positions Clinicals for sustainable long-term growth. This team values close collaboration with product, design, and backend engineering peers, and is looking for engineers who care deeply about code quality, consistency, and building interfaces that work well for real users.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain modern, performant frontend applications using JavaScript, React.js, and TypeScript.
- Build reusable, accessible UI components and establish shared front-end patterns that promote consistency across Clinicals applications.
- Integrate frontend interfaces with backend services through GraphQL APIs and RESTful endpoints.
- Leverage Node.js to support frontend build tooling, server-side rendering, or lightweight middleware services as needed.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to translate requirements into reliable, user-centered interfaces.
- Analyze existing frontend codebases and contribute to migration efforts toward a unified React-based architecture.
- Troubleshoot and resolve UI defects, performance bottlenecks, and cross-browser compatibility issues.
- Write clean, testable frontend code and actively participate in code reviews, unit testing, and end-to-end testing practices.
- Use AI-assisted development tools — such as those supporting code suggestion, automated testing, or debugging — to improve code quality and delivery speed, while applying sound engineering judgment to all final decisions.
- Contribute to frontend engineering documentation, standards, and shared practices that support team-wide consistency and velocity.
Additional Job Responsibilities:
- Support frontend deployment and release activities using tools such as Jenkins or Harness.
- Collaborate with backend engineers on API contracts and data integration patterns involving Oracle or other data systems.
- Work with existing scripts or utilities written in Perl when frontend tooling or integration requires it.
- Contribute to cloud-based frontend deployment and hosting activities on AWS (Amazon Web Services).
- Participate in sprint planning, technical design reviews, and engineering estimation activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve frontend performance, accessibility, and overall developer experience.
- Support onboarding and knowledge sharing for other frontend engineers joining the team.
- Help document component libraries, architectural decisions, and engineering conventions.
Expected Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3 to 6 years of professional frontend software development experience.
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript in production frontend environments.
- Hands-on experience building component-driven web applications with React.js.
- Working knowledge of Node.js for build tooling, server-side rendering, or frontend-adjacent service development.
- Familiarity with GraphQL for client-side data fetching and API integration.
- Exposure to Perl, Oracle, AWS (Amazon Web Services), Jenkins, and/or Harness is a plus.
- Experience writing maintainable, testable frontend code within an Agile software development lifecycle.
- Solid understanding of browser behavior, web performance optimization, and frontend debugging tools.
- Ability to collaborate across functional teams including design, product, and backend engineering in a hybrid work environment.
Expected Compensation
$119,000 - $203,000
