Design Architect

This position supports NAVFAC EURAFCENT facilities, construction, and program requirements. The selected candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting U.S. Navy and Department of Defense projects in Europe and will be employed locally through a third-party employer of record.

Position Summary

The Design Architect provides architectural design, technical review, and post-award support for Navy and Marine Corps facilities. The role supports new construction, renovation, modernization, and maintenance projects from programming and concept development through construction completion. This is a full-time, primarily on-site position located in Naples, Italy.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

- Develop architectural and interior plans, specifications, programming studies, space plans, concepts, and code compliance analyses
- Support housing, community, medical, educational, maintenance, industrial, hangar, administrative, and command-and-control facilities
- Prepare and review design submittals at conceptual, 35%, 50%, prefinal, and final stages
- Apply DoD and Navy criteria, Unified Facilities Criteria, Unified Facilities Guide Specifications, the International Building Code, NFPA 101, sustainability requirements, accessibility criteria, and host-nation regulations
- Coordinate with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, environmental, security, utility, real estate, and cost disciplines
- Conduct field investigations and participate in design reviews and coordination meetings
- Review shop drawings, submittals, requests for information, design clarifications, changes, claims, and post-award construction issues
- Develop or review scopes of work, cost estimates, technical reports, schedules, presentations, and project records
- Coordinate with host-nation authorities, designers, installation stakeholders, and government teams

Requirements

Key Qualifications

- Legal Work Authorization: Must already have the legal right to work in the country of the assigned duty station; U.S. visa or SOFA-status sponsorship is not available
- Experience supporting DoD, the Navy, another government agency, or a comparably complex public-facilities organization
- Strong knowledge of architectural design, multidisciplinary coordination, building and life-safety codes, specifications, and host-nation requirements
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Microsoft Office, and other relevant architectural design software
- Ability to manage design quality, scope, schedule, budget, life-cycle considerations, and stakeholder requirements
- Professional English proficiency; CEFR B2 or higher is required, with C1 preferred
- Active architect registration or licensure in the country of practice
- Previous NAVFAC, DoD, NATO, or overseas government-facility design experience
- Experience with sustainable design, historic facilities, and design-build delivery

Experience & Education

- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture from a NAAB-accredited program or an internationally equivalent architecture program.
- At least five years of professional experience delivering code-compliant facility designs for new construction and renovation projects.
