Sports Turf & Grounds Intern

JOB SUMMARY: Assist Turf Department with the maintenance and upkeep of three natural grass football fields and one synthetic turf indoor football field at Broncos Park powered by CommonSpirit. Will provide additional support for with the maintenance of surrounding landscape and operations as needed. Using best management practices in all phases of responsibilities to ensure site and landscape areas are of the highest quality regarding safety, functionality, and aesthetics.

Duration: Summer 2027 internship, with specific start and end dates to be determined.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with turf maintenance operations at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit

- Execute daily maintenance plans on property including, but not limited to mowing, field renovation and cultural practices, field layout and painting, fertilizer and pesticide application, tarp installation/strike, and snow removal

- Operate utility vehicles, tractors, mowers, string trimmers, hand tools, and other equipment

- Assist with maintenance of all equipment, materials, and supplies for turf maintenance operations

- Assist with repair of irrigation systems

- Communicate turf needs, maintenance requirements, and priority recommendations to Turf staff

- Execute field setup and strike for team practices and/or special events

- Perform snow removal operations from athletic fields

- Execute synthetic turf maintenance practices

Assist with landscape and hardscape maintenance operations at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit

- Execute daily maintenance of the property including native grass areas, planting beds, trees, and shrubs

- Perform cultural practices including trimming, pruning, weeding, and edging

- Troubleshoot and repair irrigation systems

- Communicate landscape needs, maintenance requirements, and priority recommendations to Grounds staff

- Execute weed management plan through mechanical and chemical applications

- Maintain all drainage areas including detention ponds and sediment basins

- Assist will snow removal operations on interior sidewalks and entrances including the application of ice abatement products

- Track and maintain all equipment, material, and supply inventories required for landscape maintenance and snow removal

- Support on-site projects such as landscape renovations, arboricultural practices, storm water management, etc.

- Assist in training, operation, and maintenance of landscape equipment

Contribute to Department, Team, and Operations Department efforts

- Assist Senior Director of Sports Turf on various tasks and projects as needed

- Assist Senior VP of Operations and Operations staff as needed

- Assist Equipment staff with practice field setup, operation, and strike

- Help with field setup, strike, and use policies for non-sporting events on the field and in the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse

- Support athletic field preparation for sporting events including football, soccer, and lacrosse at all levels. This encompasses field layout and painting (lines and logos), equipment setup and strike, cleanup and repairs to surface, and ensure that field related contractual obligations are met with user groups

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

- Currently enrolled in a 2- or 4-year turfgrass/horticultural program.

- Willing to work extended hours, including weekends

- Be able to arrange transportation and living requirements

- Be able to provide letters of recommendation from an academic advisor and/or a present or past employer

- Ability to use smart phone

PREFERRED SKILLS AND ABILITY

- College-level coursework preferred

- Excellent work ethic and professionalism

- Experience operating industry standard equipment

- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions

- Work well in a team setting

- Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills

- Good oral and written communication skills

- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations

- Must have ability to maintain confidentiality

In accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the hourly rate will be $19.84/hour.
