Basic Science Learning Facilitator, Georgetown Experimental Medical Studies (GEMS) Program, Georgetown University School of Medicine - Georgetown University.

For 50 years, the GEMS Program has prepared talented, motivated students for success in medical school, including students who are the first in their families to pursue a career in medicine and those who have navigated significant educational or economic barriers on the path to medical education. This School of Medicine-based pipeline program is one of Georgetown University School of Medicine’s most established and effective pathways into the MD program.

The Basic Science Learning Facilitator (BSLF) leads instruction across the medical science modules and graduate courses of the GEMS Program. Knowledge domains include, but are not limited to, Gross Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Physiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Microbiology. Working in coordination with the Program Director and medical module faculty, the BSLF designs, implements, and evaluates the GEMS curriculum in alignment with the School of Medicine’s curriculum for allopathic medicine, with significant emphasis on classroom teaching that promotes mastery learning and the advanced academic competencies students need to succeed in the rigor of medical education.

Beyond instruction, the role carries a substantial academic advising and student-support function. The BSLF provides individualized and group academic coaching and learning-strategies support, develops and monitors student-directed learning plans, and identifies and intervenes early with students who would benefit from additional support. The BSLF also coordinates the GEMS mentoring program connecting current students, program participants, and alumni, and provides transitional support to first-year (M1) medical students as they adjust to the academic and personal demands of medical school. The BSLF possesses outstanding teaching and cooperative-learning skills, along with strong interpersonal skills, to foster an interactive, respectfully managed learning environment for an annual cohort of approximately 25 students.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

- Deliver instruction across the GEMS biomedical science modules and graduate courses for an annual cohort of approximately 25 students.
- Design, implement, and evaluate the GEMS curriculum in alignment with the School of Medicine’s allopathic medical curriculum.
- Provide individualized and group academic coaching and learning-strategies support to students.
- Develop, document, and monitor student-directed learning plans, identifying and intervening early with students who would benefit from additional support.
- Coordinate the GEMS mentoring program and provide transitional support to first-year (M1) medical students adjusting to medical school.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of instruction, advising, learning plans, and assessment data, and report outcomes to the Program Director.

Work Interactions

The BSLF reports to the Director of the GEMS Program. This position has no direct reports. The knowledge and skills competencies of the BSLF support a rigorous, supportive, and inclusive learning environment consistent with the University’s Jesuit values and mission, and with the requirements for the School of Medicine’s continuing accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The BSLF engages medical module academic directors and faculty in the exchange of pedagogical best practices and resources for the benefit of students across the School of Medicine’s academic programs.

Requirements and Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

- MS or PhD in the Biomedical Sciences, with emphasis in one or more of the following: Gross Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Physiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, or Microbiology; or an MD.
- Four years of teaching experience in a health-professions curriculum with application to clinical contexts (two years with an MD).Four years of experience in academic-skills and learning-strategies advising in higher education.
- Two years of experience providing direct instruction and academic support to students transitioning into rigorous graduate or professional education.
- Two years of experience with anatomical dissection of a human cadaver.
- Demonstrated knowledge of pedagogical methods for the allopathic medical context.

Preferred Qualifications:

- PhD in Biomedical Science.
- Seven years of teaching experience in graduate-level biomedical science courses.
- Two years of teaching experience in a health-professions degree program.
- Five years of experience providing direct instruction and academic support to students transitioning into rigorous graduate or professional education.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$66,783.00 - $126,720.23

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
