Key responsibilities of a detailer:
- Paint correction: Color sanding and buffing. Must be able to denib and polish. Cut and buff fresh paint. Removing minor to difficult scratches and swirl marks using specialized techniques.
- Exterior cleaning: Washing, drying, claying, polishing, waxing, and applying protective coatings to the vehicle's exterior.
- Interior cleaning: Vacuuming, shampooing carpets and upholstery, wiping down dashboard and console surfaces, cleaning door jambs, and removing debris from crevices.
- Wheel and tire care: Cleaning and dressing tires, polishing wheels
- Glass cleaning: Cleaning and polishing windows and mirrors
- Vehicle inspection: Assessing the condition of the vehicle to identify areas needing attention and discussing repair options with manager
- Maintaining inventory: Managing cleaning supplies and ensuring proper storage and inventory.
Skills and qualities needed for a detailer:
- Organized and able to maintain a clean and safe workplace
- Attention to detail: The ability to meticulously clean every nook and cranny of a vehicle
- Physical stamina: Standing and bending for extended periods while performing cleaning tasks
- Manual dexterity: Precise application of cleaning products and use of specialized tools
- Customer service skills: Building rapport with clients and addressing their concerns
- Knowledge of cleaning products and techniques: Understanding the proper use of various cleaning chemicals and tools for different surfaces
- Basic mechanical knowledge: Ability to identify potential damage or issues on a vehicle
