The Bookkeeper supports the Pastor's financial and administrative responsibilities to the parish which includes the church and all associated ministries.

MINISTERIAL CHARACTER

The Diocesan Bishop is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the particular Church (the Diocese) entrusted to him. In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ's mission present and enduring as the Shepherd of the Christian Community. In order to fulfill his mission, the Diocesan Bishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators, who are clerics, religious, and lay people. He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Each position employed in the Diocese of Corpus Christi helps to extend the ministry of the Diocesan Bishop in particular ways as outlined in the job duties and responsibilities. Therefore, the position is closely connected to and assists the Diocesan Bishop in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the church.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The list below reflects the general details considered necessary to describe the primary functions of the job identified and shall not be construed as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the job.

- As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Corpus Christi in both your professional and personal life

- Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church

- Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed

- Responsible for management of the financial resources of the parish and its ministries

- Prepares monthly financial reports for the church and school to submit to the diocese

- Assists in preparing the annual operating budget of the parish and the school

- Assist the pastor and principal with budget monitoring and expense tracking

- Accurately maintain, process, and oversee employee payroll, benefits, vacation, sick time used, and journal entries

- Ensure timeliness and accuracy of all accounts payable

- Ensures the parish and its ministries are compliant with all payroll tax and insurance responsibilities

- Maintains accurate financial records and files

- Maintains responsible cash flow management system and maximizes cash management resources

- Oversees accounting policies and procedures for the parish and its ministries

- Oversees counting and deposit of all parish funds; manages banking of the parish and its ministries

- Maintains and administers petty cash

- Participates in Finance Council meetings as required by the pastor

- Initiates all purchases (expenditures) and obtains approval of pastor as required

- Ensures pastor is informed and consulted on all matters and operations of the parish

- Maintains all records for Creating and Maintaining a Safe Environment for all church employees and volunteers

- Assist in answering the door and phone as needed

- Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

- High School Diploma or equivalent required

- Minimum of 5 years experience in bookkeeping or accounting

- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with diocesan policies and procedures preferred

- Valid Texas Drivers License required

- Excellent time management skills, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail, capacity to prioritize by assessing situations to determine urgency, and ability to undertake self-directed tasks when necessary

- Strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills with attention to service

- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

- Proficiency in the use of computer programs is preferred: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Publisher), Adobe, QuickBooks, or other accounting software

- Self-motivated and proactive with ability to follow procedures, work within established guidelines, and work independently as needed

- Flexible and adaptive to change

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Reports to Pastor

- Certification in Safe Environment training provided by the Office for Safe Environment and Child & Family Resources is required

- Criminal background check and drug screening

- Must adhere to diocesan policies and procedures
