Product Engineer

As a Product Engineer supporting wildfire mitigation initiatives, you will serve as the voice of the customer, helping shape product features, workflows, and documentation that solve real-world challenges. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with customers, researchers, power engineers, and R&D teams to advance wildfire monitoring and mitigation solutions, influence product development, and support technologies that improve grid resiliency and situational awareness. Through a combination of technical expertise, customer engagement, product validation, and innovation, you will help transform complex requirements into practical solutions that are intuitive, effective, and impactful.

Primary Responsibilities

- Serve as the primary contact for customers interested in partnering for wildfire mitigation research as well as support existing partnerships.
- Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of SEL automation, communications, and software products, their applications in the partnership projects, as well as other solutions on the market to provide customers with the best possible research setup.
- Act as the voice of the customer by understanding customer challenges, workflows, and requirements, in the automation, communication, and software domain and translating them into features, functionality, and user experiences.
- Work closely with R&D engineers to define product requirements, and ensure product features meet customer and market expectations.
- Maintain an operational understanding of automation architectures, communications systems, and software platforms used in utility environments.
- Develop expertise in data acquisition, storage, and visualization technologies such as InfluxDB, Telegraf, Grafana, and related software tools used to support wildfire mitigation research and monitoring applications.
- Collaborate closely with power engineers and researchers to develop solutions that support wildfire detection, monitoring, situational awareness, and grid resiliency initiatives.
- Prepare documentation guides, instruction manuals, release notes, technical papers, and customer-facing training materials.
- Perform product validation testing and approve validation results.
- Assist with developing concept documents, system architectures, and new product ideas within R&D.

Required Qualifications

- B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- 2+ years of working knowledge of automation, communications, software integration, and/or electric utility systems.
- Understanding of industrial networking, communications systems, and automation practices.
- Familiarity with data collection, time-series databases, and visualization tools such as Grafana, InfluxDB, Telegraf, or similar platforms.
- Excellent technical presentation, training, and writing skills.
- Strong customer-facing communication and relationship-building skills.
- Interest in customer workflows and translating customer needs into product features and documentation.
- Understanding of electric power systems and utility operations is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with SEL automation, communications, or software products.
- Experience with electric utility communications, SCADA, or system integration.
- Experience specifying graphical user interfaces and customer-facing software features.

This position has the option to be location in Pullman or Lynnwood, WA.

Salary Range Data

We anticipate filling this position as a Product Engineer $100,600 - $144,000 per year. Our compensation ranges are based on the responsibilities of the role. Starting pay is determined individually and considers factors such as relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and training. Candidates may be considered at different levels based on their background. As a result, pay may vary to align with the level of the role.
