Biobank Associate Scientist

The R&D Clinical Research Team is seeking a highly motivated Biobank Associate Scientist to independently manage both Corporate Account and Private Practice sample collections and clinical research data. The successful candidate will be energetic, inquisitive, detail-oriented and thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple external collaborations. This role functions in close coordination with the Biobank Manager, the Clinical Research Manager for the Discovery Team, and the Sr Oncology Clinical Research Manager for the New Product Development Team.

This role is the primary point of accountability for the Corporate Account and Private Practice specimen collection stream, working independently under the general direction of the Biobank Manager rather than requiring close supervision of individual tasks. The decisions made here directly affect the timeliness and integrity of that specimen stream. Just as importantly, this role is a key face of IDEXX to our external corporate accounts and private practice submitters: clear, responsive communication with those customers builds the trust that keeps samples and clinical research studies moving forward.

This is a full-time, onsite, day-shift position with the occasional need to adjust hours or availability to meet business deadlines and operational demands.

In this role, you will:

- Independently manage day-to-day sample handling for Corporate Account and Private Practice collections, including receipt, processing, storage, retrieval, distribution, disposition of samples, and management of clinical research data.
- Exercise scientific judgment to prioritize and resolve routine and non-routine issues without step-by-step direction.
- Maintain specimen identity, integrity, and traceability for the assigned collection streams, reconciling physical inventory against Biological Sample Inventory (BSI) records and resolving discrepancies.
- Work in BSI as a day-to-day user, including data entry, queries, standard reporting, and flagging of system or data issues to the Biobank Operations Lead.
- Coordinate incoming and outgoing specimen logistics for assigned accounts, including manifests, shipment reconciliation, and direct communication with external Corporate Accounts and Private Practice submitters.
- Balance competing priorities across multiple accounts, studies, and requests, escalating to the Biobank Manager only when trade-offs affect research timelines or specimen integrity.
- Support the Biobank Operations Lead on broader initiatives, such as repository organization, process improvement, and SOP development as capacity allows, without primary ownership of those initiatives.
- Contribute to SOPs and work instructions for Corporate Account and Private Practice workflows, and follow established SOPs for other biobank workflows.
- Serve as a backup point of contact for freezer alarms and other specimen-storage events during business hours when the Biobank Operations Lead is unavailable.

What you need to succeed:

- BS or BA in a life science with 2 years of laboratory experience; An Associates with 5 years experience would still be considered.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally with internal research teams and external Corporate Accounts or Private Practice contacts, and to maintain accurate, clear documentation and present information effectively.
- Strong knowledge of biospecimen handling, storage, traceability, repository management, and research-support workflows.
- Strong data-management skills, including validation, reconciliation, import preparation, inventory tracking, and large dataset organization.
- Strong organizational and planning skills, with careful attention to specimen identity and data accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities with minimal oversight under changing research demands.
- Ability to work independently in a biological inventory system such as BSI, and to troubleshoot routine specimen or data issues without needing administrator access, escalating what can't be resolved independently.
- Proficiency with Excel and the MS Office suite, and with standard inventory or labeling tools.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of working in a lab, including standing and sitting for extended periods, extended reach, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with teams across units.
- Goal-oriented and highly motivated, with a strong commitment to quality improvement and best practices in clinical research.
- Prior veterinary experience or knowledge of a veterinary practice environment preferred.
