Reporter, North Country and Climate Change

NHPR is seeking a curious, nimble and innovative reporter to cover the state's northernmost region with a special focus on climate change and the environment.

This is the first time we will have a full-time reporter based in the North Country, a region encompassing one-third of the state and one that's seen significant changes in recent decades.

We're looking for someone who can make local stories of all kinds feel universal (or at least relevant to a statewide audience) through on-the-ground feature reporting and daily news coverage; and someone who can build sources and trust in a region that historically hasn't received much focus from statewide news organizations. This reporter must be comfortable working independently, with a proven ability to build sources across a range of areas.

In addition to covering the North Country through a general assignment lens, this reporter will pay special attention to environmental and climate-related issues in the region. Mountains, streams and forests are key to the North Country's identity. But the region's natural resources are under pressure from climate change, as are the people who depend on the outdoors for their livelihood. This reporter will spend about half their time filing climate and environment stories for By Degrees, NHPR's climate change reporting project.

This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid-eligible role based in Grafton, Coos or Carroll County, reporting to a senior editor based in our newsroom in Concord. This position is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit. The role will be classified as either a Reporter (with a minimum salary of $62,100) or a Senior Reporter (with a minimum salary of $69,300), depending on the chosen applicant's experience level.. We also consider internal equity, among other factors, when deciding compensation.

Essential Duties Include:

- Gather, write and produce news reports for on-air broadcast and digital distribution.

- Use initiative and source development to develop both daily news and enterprise reporting.

- Participate in newsroom-wide projects, including multi-part series and digital products, with a focus on journalism and storytelling that engages a new, diverse audience.

- Work varied shifts to meet news coverage demands, including breaking news and other appropriate coverage reasons.

- Participate in station fundraising, live appearances and sponsorship activities.

Other Responsibilities Include:

- Engage with communities around New Hampshire's North Country to deepen understanding of the region and help meet the information needs of local residents.

- Utilize social media to disseminate news to the NHPR audience and beyond.

- Seek professional development opportunities, with support of managers, and take initiative to learn new skills in reporting, on-air presentation and digital news production.

Qualifications:

- 4+ years of reporting experience in broadcast, print or digital journalism.

- Excellent writing and organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.

- Demonstrated news judgment in recognizing the relative importance of a news story and in developing stories.

- Demonstrated success building trust with sources to produce original news coverage.

- Ability to develop creative approaches to human interest coverage and feature stories.

- Passion and intuition for audio journalism, a keen eye and ear for media trends and audience needs.

- Technologically versatile with willingness to expand skills. Multimedia skills, including experience in producing or editing data visualizations, video or other digital media, as well as audio.

- Ability to represent NHPR standards and code of ethics in the course of interviewing, reporting and use of social media.
