Our technology teams sit within our Group Chief Information Office (GCIO), building the digital platforms, systems, and products our customers and colleagues use every day, keeping assets and data secure, and delivering exceptional digital experiences.

Engineering builds and supports the systems that help the bank function smoothly and adapt to changing customer and business needs. The department focuses on delivering dependable, high-quality technology solutions that are secure, scalable and fit for purpose

What you'll do

You’ll work with engineers and other technology colleagues on projects that support HSBC’s digital-first approach. Depending on your team, you could help develop new products and services, improve existing ones, and support software that keeps the business moving. You’ll meet engineers, architects and colleagues across the wider business, and get hands-on with coding frameworks, programming languages, AI tools and modern ways of working across development and operations. You may also help monitor performance, investigate technical issues and suggest improvements. It’s practical engineering work, with support from experienced colleagues, on technology used by people and customers around the world. The internship also includes structured assessments aligned to securing a graduate role, giving you chances to demonstrate how you think, collaborate and deliver, through tasks such as project work, presentations, interviews or skills-based evaluations.

What you'll learn

You’ll build your engineering foundation through a mix of technical training, skills development and practical learning. Along the way, you’ll deepen your understanding of how systems are designed, tested and maintained to support change across HSBC. You’ll explore coding languages, tech stacks and engineering best practice through classroom sessions and self-led learning, while also developing wider professional skills through workshops and coaching. Community and volunteering projects linked to your local office will help you grow beyond the technical side too. By the end of the internship, you’ll have stronger engineering confidence, a better understanding of how technology supports the bank, and a clearer sense of how you could continue your career in this space.

Where you'll work

You’ll work in HSBC’s engineering community within the Global Chief Information Office, alongside teams building and supporting technology used across the bank. It’s a collaborative environment where engineers, architects and delivery teams work together across products, platforms and markets. You’ll be part of a modern office culture that values curiosity, experimentation and shared problem-solving. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must:

- Be available to work full time for 8 weeks commencing June 2027

- Be expected to achieve a 2:1 degree classification or higher (or an overseas equivalent).

- Will have completed studies by 2028

- Be fluent in English

- Be able to work from the Sheffield office at least 3 days per week

- Be in the penultimate year of your undergraduate studies

- Legally permitted to work in the UK for the full duration of the programme and beyond the end date, without requiring HSBC visa sponsorship

Please provide your achieved or expected final undergraduate degree result using the grading system used by your university (e.g. 2:1, First Class, GPA 3.5/4.0, 75% or local equivalent).

Additional information

This particular program does not satisfy the Home Office eligibility criteria for visa sponsorship.
