About this role
The Image Quality & Qualification team at Apple is seeking a results driven image quality lab automation engineer to help us test and evaluate the full camera system. In this position, you will design, build, conduct, and present analysis of Camera Image Quality investigations - both objective and subjective. You will also develop custom automation solutions for our Camera Imaging lab. Your collaboration with cross-functional Camera teams at Apple will directly influence the performance and image quality of Apple’s iOS cameras.
As an Image Quality Lab Automation Engineer in Camera & Photos, you will play a critical role in ensuring that Apple cameras produce best-in-class image quality. Your primary responsibilities include designing custom lab tests for novel features, algorithms, or hardware solutions and analyzing the results to influence major decisions across various Apple camera teams. This role requires the ability to understand basic image quality (objective & subjective), some knowledge of camera hardware & firmware design, software automation in a lab environment, and an enthusiasm for building bespoke solutions. The ideal candidate thrives in some ambiguity, is not afraid to challenge assumptions, and has a passion for camera image quality.
Minimum Qualifications
Real world experience building automation systems with coding models (Opus/Gemini/GPT) and coding harnesses like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor
Expertise in at least one of the following: Bash, Python, MATLAB, Swift, C++
Technical familiarity with imaging algorithms and pipelines
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with experience in cross-functional collaboration
Working knowledge of photography and camera terminology
Familiarity with ISO standard Image Quality Metrics and their associated charts
BS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Imaging Science, or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
Deep expertise in camera image quality metrics on consumer devices
Knowledge or research experience in psychophysics
Hands-on experience in mobile camera system debugging
Deep expertise in camera algorithms and image pipelines
Experience with 3A algorithm design
Photography expertise
