Evening Supervisor – Women’s Night Shelter

$34–$36 per hour

Lead a safe, calm environment when it matters most

Every evening, women in Christchurch need a place where they feel secure, respected, and supported. As Evening Supervisor, you’ll lead our Women’s Night Shelter — guiding staff, supporting wahine in need, and ensuring each night runs safely and smoothly.

This is a practical, people-focused leadership role where your calm approach, strong judgement, and ability to hold boundaries will make a real difference.

About Us – Christchurch City Mission

The Christchurch City Mission (Te Whare Mīhana Ki Ōtautahi) helps anyone in need, no matter their situation. We work alongside people going through tough times—whether it’s due to job loss, housing issues, addiction, family difficulties, or financial stress.

We respond to both immediate crises and long-term challenges. About the role

You’ll lead evening operations in a dynamic environment, supporting both staff and the women staying in the shelter.

Your evenings will include:

- Welcoming women and helping them settle safely for the night

- Leading intake and creating a calm, structured environment

- Supporting and guiding staff on shift

- Responding to challenges, including de-escalation when needed

- Maintaining safe practice and clear boundaries

- Completing handovers and incident follow-up

Hours: Monday–Friday, 2:30pm–8:30pm (with flexibility to work additional hours from time to time, as required)

You’ll be part of a wider team with clear processes and support — you’re not doing this alone.

What we're looking for

- We’re open to candidates from a range of backgrounds. You may come from:

Mental health or AOD services

- Homelessness or housing support

- Youth work or community services

- Corrections, justice, or crisis support

- Healthcare or residential care

You'll bring:

- Experience working in high-needs or people-focused environments

- Confidence responding to challenging behaviour and crisis situations

- The ability to stay calm and make sound decisions under pressure

- Experience supporting or guiding others in a live environment

- A practical, trauma-informed approach
