Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive medical assessment and management of critically ill patients admitted to the AITU.
- Conduct regular clinical rounds and review patients' clinical status, investigations, treatment plans and response to therapy.
- Manage critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and organ support, under the supervision and guidance of the Critical Care Consultant.
- Recognize and appropriately manage medical emergencies, acute deterioration and life-threatening conditions.
- Participate in resuscitation and emergency response, including advanced life-support procedures as appropriately trained and credentialed.
- Initiate and monitor appropriate investigations, treatments and therapeutic interventions.
- Assist with management of patients requiring mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation and other forms of respiratory support.
- Monitor hemodynamic status and assist in the management of patients requiring vasoactive and other critical-care therapies.
- Participate in procedures within the scope of training, hospital privileges and credentialing.
- Ensure timely documentation of clinical assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, procedures and discharge summaries.
- Communicate effectively with patients' relatives regarding clinical condition, treatment plans and prognosis, in coordination with the treating consultant.
- Coordinate with specialists from other departments for multidisciplinary management of critically ill patients.
- Work closely with nursing, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, pharmacy, laboratory and other support teams.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection-control practices, medication-safety standards and critical-care protocols.
- Identify and escalate any significant clinical deterioration or concerns to the Consultant / Clinical Head promptly.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, clinical audits, case discussions and departmental academic activities.
- Contribute to quality-improvement, patient-safety and evidence-based practice initiatives within Critical Care Services.
- Participate in teaching and mentoring of junior doctors, residents and other clinical staff, as applicable.
- Maintain professional competence through continuing medical education, training and relevant certifications.
- Ensure ethical, professional and patient-centred clinical practice at all times.
Clinical Responsibilities
The Associate Consultant is expected to demonstrate competency, as applicable to the hospital's scope of practice, in:
- Initial assessment and stabilization of critically ill patients
- Airway assessment and management
- Mechanical and non-invasive ventilation
- Hemodynamic monitoring and management
- Sepsis and septic shock management
- Acute respiratory failure
- Acute kidney injury and management of critically ill patients requiring renal support
- Acute neurological emergencies
- Cardiac emergencies and arrhythmias
- Multiorgan dysfunction
- Post-operative and high-risk surgical critical care
- Toxicological and metabolic emergencies
- Nutritional assessment and support in critically ill patients
- Pain, sedation and delirium management
- Prevention and management of ICU-related complications
- End-of-life care and appropriate communication with patients and families
