About this role
The Fitness Instructor is responsible for leading safe, effective, and engaging fitness classes or sessions for YMCA members of varying fitness levels and ages. The instructor creates a supportive, inclusive atmosphere that reflects the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
Essential Functions:
- Lead group fitness classes (e.g., strength training, cardio, yoga, cycling) or provide individual fitness instruction.
- Ensure participant safety by monitoring proper form, offering modifications, and educating on safe exercise practices.
- Greet and interact with members in a friendly, professional manner to promote a positive YMCA experience.
- Prepare class routines and maintain consistency while keeping classes fresh and engaging.
- Enforce all YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to safety, health, and conduct.
- Set up and break down class equipment before and after each session.
- Respond to member questions and provide guidance on fitness-related topics.
- Maintain accurate attendance and incident reports as needed.
- Attend mandatory staff meetings, training, and continuing education.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Ability to lead and demonstrate physical activities for extended periods.
- May require lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, standing, and moving around for the duration of a shift.
- Noise levels may vary; fitness music and equipment use can create a loud environment.
Qualifications
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Nationally recognized group fitness or personal training certification (e.g., ACE, NASM, AFAA, ACSM).
- Previous experience leading fitness classes or training clients is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
