Protection And Controls Engineer

Job Title: Protection and Controls Engineer Job Description The Protection and Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, coordination, and ongoing support of electrical protection systems across distribution and substation environments. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the power system through protection coordination studies, relay settings management, power quality investigations, and technical support for field operations. T Responsibilities

- Design and analyze electrical protection and control systems for distribution and substation environments to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Perform protection coordination studies and develop relay settings to maintain system stability and minimize equipment damage during faults.
- Conduct power quality investigations and recommend corrective actions to improve system performance and reliability.
- Provide ongoing technical support to field operations, including troubleshooting protection and control issues and supporting commissioning activities.
- Act as a subject matter expert for protection philosophies, system studies, relay technologies, and grid reliability initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, operations, maintenance, and field crews to implement protection schemes and ensure effective system integration.
- Support critical system upgrades and capital projects as part of broader grid modernization and infrastructure investment programs.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, leveraging structured methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma where applicable.
- Participate in the development and review of standards, procedures, and best practices related to protection and control systems.
- Support system planning activities by providing technical input related to protection, controls, and power system performance.

Essential Skills

- A minimum of 6+ years of experience in electrical protection and controls systems.
- Professional Engineering designation (PEng).
- Strong background in protection and controls, electrical systems, controls engineering, and power engineering.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with field crew members and cross-functional teams.

Work Environment This role operates in a hybrid work environment with three days onsite each week, including mandatory onsite presence on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

This is a Contract position based out of Ottawa, ON.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $85.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
