The WEX Summer Internship Program: Learn, Lead, and Make an Impact
Our 13-week paid internship program, running from late May to mid-August, is a chance for you to gain real-world experience and develop your skills. Recruiting begins in September and continues through December at our various locations across the U.S.
You won't just be a bystander; you'll work on impactful projects and contribute to WEX’s mission. About the Team/Role:
As a Software Engineer on the WEX Technology team, you will work in a team that partners closely with Product Managers and customers to learn about the challenges employers face while navigating the competitive business landscape. You will design solutions that solve problems in ways our customers love and work for our business. You will build the highest quality software in the latest technologies and test-driven development practices.
About the Team/Role: As a Software Engineer Intern, you will work alongside engineers and Product Managers on a backend team operating on AWS. This role focuses on core engineering fundamentals, writing well-tested code, and using AI developer tools responsibly to accelerate delivery.
How you'll make an impact:
- Engineered Backend Solutions: Design and maintain backend services using Go (or Java/C/PHP) grounded in clean software engineering principles.
- AWS Cloud Operations: Support, deploy, and manage backend systems hosted entirely on AWS cloud infrastructure.
- Rigorous Testing & Code Quality: Write tests across unit and UI levels to validate your own code before relying on automated pipelines or AI generation.
- AI-Assisted Workflows: Use AI productivity tools (Cursor, Claude, Gemini, Copilot) to speed up tasks, applying critical thinking to audit AI-generated code while making minor front-end UI updates when needed.
Experience you'll bring:
- Educational Foundation: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Software Engineering, or related field and will have completed at least your Sophomore year of school at the start of the internship.
- Strong proficiency in Go (Golang) or general backend languages (Java, C, PHP) with solid software engineering fundamentals.
- Practical exposure to AWS cloud infrastructure and core cloud services.
- Experience with software testing best practices (unit testing, basic UI testing).
- Balanced awareness of modern AI development tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude, Gemini) paired with the critical discipline to verify output.
The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan. Pay Range: $27.00 - $35.00
