Purpose of the Role
The 3D Printer Technician provides technical support, fault diagnosis, repairs and maintenance for 3D printers. The role supports the returns and after-sales process, assessing units, completing authorised repairs and confirming correct operation before release. The technician will develop technical capability through training and supervised practical work.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Assessment and Diagnosis
- Diagnose printer malfunctions and deliver troubleshooting support through in-person,
- phone calls and email correspondence.
Repairs and Maintenance
- Complete authorized repairs and component replacements (nozzles, hotends,
- extruders, belts, fans, sensors, motors, build surfaces) within training and competency
- limits. Perform cleaning, lubrication, belt adjustment, bed leveling, calibration and
- approved firmware updates, and carry out routine maintenance to minimize downtime.
Testing and Quality Control
- Assemble and set up printers for assessment or testing and perform functional checks
- and test prints to confirm faults are resolved. Check completeness and documentation
- before release, report recurring faults, and apply consistent attention to detail and
- health and safety practice throughout.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Grade 12
A relevant technical certificate (electronics,
electrical engineering, mechatronics, IT hardware) or training in 3D printing/equipment
repair is advantageous
Essential Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of 3D printing technologies, materials and software (CAD, slicing),
and logical fault finding across mechanical and electronic components.
- Strong technical/mechanical aptitude, safe tool use and accurate component
replacement.
- Effective time management to prioritise multiple print jobs, follow checklists and
organise assigned work.
- Computer literacy and accurate service record keeping.
- Attention to detail, quality-control mindset, and sound judgement on when to
escalate.
- Customer service orientation and clear communication with customers and
colleagues.
- Adaptability to new technologies, deadline orientation under pressure, and
strong teamwork.
Key Performance Areas
- Fault diagnosis and repair quality, with successful test prints and repeat repairs
monitored.
- Turnaround time on assigned jobs, with delays communicated clearly.
- Consistently meet and maintain agreed SLA standards.
- Production output and material usage accurately tracked and reported.
- Complete, accurate service records and responsive technical support.
- Parts control, tool care and workshop safety/housekeeping.
- Skills development through training and growing competence over time
