OPEN SCIENCE ESSENTIALS SUMMARY
The Open Science Essentials course provides introductory knowledge of the principles, practices, and tools necessary to conduct open science. This knowledge empowers learners to make their research more transparent, reproducible, and available to all. The course covers key topics such as open data, open peer review, and collaborative research practices. Open Science Essentials is intended to be a concise, stand-alone course for learners who are seeking a broad overview of open science concepts. Those already practicing open science and learners who complete the Open Science Essentials course are encouraged to expand their open science knowledge by taking NASA's Open Science 101 course. The course content is appropriate for learners of varying ages, experience levels, and backgrounds.
Upon completion, learners will earn a NASA Open Science Essentials digital badge and certificate. Additionally, the NASA Open Science Essentials training listing can be added to their ORCID profile.
REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS (non-NASA learners)
1. Register by clicking "Apply" in the upper righthand corner of this page and answering the questions on the following pages.
2. When complete, your registration will be processed in 24-48 hours.
3. After your registration is processed, you will receive two emails. You will need to click the link in the first email, titled "Finish Registration: Canvas" and set up your Canvas account. You will create a new course-specific password that will be used to log into the course.
4. Once you have completed setting up your Canvas account, you will be able to access the Open Science Essentials course using the link provided in the email.

FULL COURSE DESCRIPTION
Open science is a collaborative culture enabled by technology that empowers the open sharing of data, information, and knowledge within the scientific community and the wider public to accelerate scientific research and understanding. This single-module course consists of five lessons that provide learners with an introductory knowledge of the principles, practices, and tools necessary to conduct open science. Course completion enables learners to begin conducting and participating in open science projects.
Lesson 1: Why Open Science? - This lesson establishes what “open science” means and explores how open practices benefit both individual researchers and the broader scientific community by increasing visibility, impact, and reproducibility while also reducing errors.
Lesson 2: Concerns and Considerations When Practicing Open Science - This lesson addresses common fears and challenges in adopting open science, including social and institutional barriers, concerns about being "scooped," and legal and ethical considerations for handling sensitive data.
Lesson 3: Planning for Open Science - This lesson provides a framework for conducting open science, covering the open science workflow, the FAIR Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), the creation of an Open Science and Data Management Plan (OSDMP), and defining roles and responsibilities within a project.
Lesson 4: Components of Open Science - This lesson introduces the fundamental components of open research. It provides an overview of open data, open source software, and open results, explaining how to approach sharing each of these core research products.
Lesson 5: Tools for Open Science - This lesson introduces the practical tools that support open science. Topics include persistent identifiers (like DOIs and ORCID iDs), open licensing, using repositories for data and code, version control, pre-registration of studies, and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the open science landscape.
