Team Introduction:
The ByteDance Tax team works closely with business and corporate functions to provide tax advisory, planning, compliance, and support across the business. We help ensure compliance with direct and indirect tax requirements while supporting the business in navigating tax-related matters and implementing practical solutions.
We are looking for a Japan Tax Country Manager to join our Tax team in Tokyo. This is an exciting opportunity to gain broad exposure to Japan tax matters within a fast-growing and dynamic business. The ideal candidate will have solid knowledge of Japanese tax, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with both local and global stakeholders. This role is based in Tokyo and follows a full onsite work arrangement.
Responsibilities:
- Tax Compliance & Reporting: Support Japan tax filings, including corporate income tax, consumption tax, withholding tax, and local business taxes, as well as tax provisioning and payments.
- Tax Governance & Audits: Maintain tax controls and processes, and support inquiries and audits from the National Tax Agency (NTA).
- Tax Business Partnering: Partner with global and regional Tax teams to provide Japan-specific tax insights and support.
- Cross-functional Tax Support: Collaborate with Accounting, Legal, Transfer Pricing, Treasury, HR, and other teams on tax-related matters and business initiatives.
- Tax Projects & Legislation: Support local tax projects, including new business launches and tax incentives, while monitoring changes in Japanese tax laws and assessing their business impact.
Minimum qualification(s):
- 3+ years of Japanese tax experience in industry or a multinational accounting/tax firm.
- Good understanding of accounting principles and ability to own projects and coordinate input from multiple tax advisors and vendors.
- Ability to build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and external vendors.
- Self-starter who can work independently in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Willingness to learn new tax concepts and conduct technical research.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to perform accurate tax analysis.
- Proficiency in English or Mandarin is required to collaborate with internal stakeholders globally, where either language is a primary working language.
Preferred Qualification(s):
- Japanese accounting or tax-related professional qualification.
- Experience in the TMT industry preferred.
