They perform visual inspections, monitor fabrication processes, verify welding procedures, and document quality control data.
Key Responsibilities
- Weld & Material Inspection: Inspect structural steel joints, fit-ups, and assemblies before, during, and after welding to check for surface defects, size conformity, and dimensional accuracy.
- Code & Blueprint Compliance: Read and interpret structural blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols to verify that work meets specifications.
- Standard Adherence: Ensure compliance with major structural codes such as AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code - Steel) and related standards like AISC or ASTM.
- Procedure & Personnel Verification: Review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and verify that individual welders hold proper certifications for the tasks they perform.
- Testing Coordination: Witness and review Non-Destructive Testing (NDT/NDE) activities such as ultrasonic (UT), magnetic particle (MT), or liquid penetrant (PT) testing.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of inspections, log non-conformances, write daily quality reports, and sign off on completed structural components.
