About this role

Position Status – Temporary: This position is being filled on a temporary basis to provide coverage during the military leave of absence of the regular employee. The position will remain temporary and may end upon the regular employees return to City employment. Employment in this temporary position does not provide a right or expectation of permanent employment in the position.

Job Summary : This position is responsible for assisting automotive technicians performing repair work, routine maintenance, and servicing a variety of City vehicles and equipment. As skill level advances, there will be opportunities for promotion. This is an entry level position that will help certified technicians and perform routine maintenance on light vehicles. On the job training will help the right applicant move up to certified technician status within a couple years and become ASE certified.

Major Duties:

- Inspects, tests, adjusts, repairs, and replaces complete or integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, etc..

- Will be keeping paperwork and records for each repair performed. Maintain records of inventory.

- Applying lubricants to the moving parts of vehicle engines to prevent premature engine wear and ensure optimal engine performance.

- Lubricating wheel bearings to prevent excessive tire wear.

- Performing engine cleanings to prevent rust formation.

- Replacing cabin, fuel, air, and oil filters as required.

- Performing tire rotations to ensure even tire wear.

- Keeping the shop neat and tools orderly at the end of each day.

Knowledge Required by the Position:

- Knowledge of the principles governing the operation and maintenance of internal combustion engines;

- Knowledge of the tools, equipment and technology used in the repair and maintenance of automotive and related equipment;

- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive repair trade;

- Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical trade;

- Skill in repairing defects in a wide variety of automotive equipment;

- Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic failures;

- Ability to adapt successfully to the wide range of equipment repaired in the shop;

- Ability to learn how to safely operate gas and arc welding equipment to fabricate parts or mounting equipment;

- Ability to learn new technology and terminology of modern automotive equipment;

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers and other City employees;

- Ability to keep shop inventory, tools, and building organized;

- Ability to obtain Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

Work Environment : Most repair work is completed in a shop; on occasion, equipment repairs are made in the field which may involve hazardous conditions. The work involves considerable physical activity with exposure to safety hazards normally associated with general vehicle and equipment repair.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent; we prefer two (2) years of automotive mechanic experience, or vocational school training, but will train dedicated applicants that want to grow in this field of work; Vocational coursework in a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience . Valid Drivers License. Previous experience in automotive maintenance and light repair.

Preferred Qualifications:

Any ASE certifications with 3-5 years experience.
