About this role
Meta is seeking a Generator Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join our Data Center Facility Operations team. Our data centers form the critical infrastructure backbone that powers Meta's global platforms and services. In this role, you will serve as the primary technical authority on emergency and standby power generation systems, driving operational excellence, reliability strategy, and standardization across Meta's data center portfolio. You will partner with cross-functional teams to ensure generator systems meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
Serve as the primary technical authority and consultative resource for diesel generator systems, automatic transfer switches, and associated fuel and exhaust infrastructure across data center sites
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and lead resolution of complex generator and fuel system failures, including root cause analysis and corrective action development
Develop, review, and continuously improve standard operating procedures, maintenance strategies, and reliability programs for generator and standby power systems
Analyze generator performance data and maintenance metrics to identify reliability trends, drive predictive maintenance initiatives, and inform capital planning decisions
Lead and support regulatory compliance activities related to air quality permits, emissions reporting, and fuel storage requirements for generator systems
Oversee and validate generator vendor-performed activities including commissioning, load bank testing, preventive maintenance, and major repairs
Manage generator vendor relationships, work scopes, and scheduling to ensure quality outcomes and alignment with data center operational requirements
Provide technical training and knowledge transfer to critical facility engineers on generator theory, operations, and maintenance best practices
Collaborate with global engineering, EHS, and operations teams to support standardization initiatives and contribute to generator specifications for new data center builds and retrofits
Support factory witness testing, site acceptance testing, and commissioning activities for new generator installations across the data center portfolio
Qualifications
6+ years of experience in generator maintenance, power generation systems, or diesel mechanic trade work in a critical facility or industrial environment
Experience with emergency and standby diesel generator systems including fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, and automatic transfer switches
Experience interpreting electrical single-line diagrams, mechanical drawings, and equipment shop drawings related to power generation systems
Experience with regulatory compliance requirements for air quality permits, emissions reporting, and above-ground fuel storage systems
Experience developing or executing procedure-based work in a critical operations environment with an emphasis on safety and reliability Trade certification in diesel mechanics or electrical systems relevant to power generation
Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for tracking work orders, maintenance history, and asset reliability data
Experience managing vendor contracts and overseeing third-party maintenance activities for large-scale generator fleets
Experience supporting generator commissioning, factory witness testing, or load bank testing in a data center or mission-critical environment
