About this role

Overview

Surf Internet seeks a part-time attorney licensed in Illinois with approximately 3-5 years of experience. The ideal candidate will have litigation or dispute-resolution experience and be comfortable handling a broad range of legal issues in a fast-paced business environment.

This role is primarily focused on dispute management, litigation support, regulatory matters, compliance, legal research, and day-to-day business counseling. The successful candidate must be comfortable operating independently in a lean legal department without dedicated legal assistant support.

Job Status: Exempt

Responsibilities:

- Assist with litigation, pre-litigation disputes, and claims management.

- Draft demand letters, settlement agreements, releases, and related correspondence.

- Coordinate with and manage outside counsel.

- Investigate and help resolve disputes involving customers, contractors, property owners, vendors, and other third parties.

- Support regulatory, permitting, compliance, and government affairs matters.

- Provide practical legal guidance to business and operational teams.

- Conduct legal research and prepare concise guidance memoranda.

- Develop policies, forms, and internal procedures.

- Review routine commercial agreements and identify legal risks when needed.

- Independently manage assigned matters, maintain organized files, track deadlines, and handle related administrative tasks without dedicated legal support staff.

Qualifications

Qualifications

- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.

- Active Illinois law license in good standing.

- Eligible to practice law in Illinois without restriction.

- 3-5 years of legal experience preferred.

- Litigation, dispute resolution, or claims management experience strongly preferred.

- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.

- Ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice.

- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.

- Demonstrated ability to manage legal matters with minimal supervision and without reliance on a legal assistant.

- Experience with telecommunications, construction, real estate, regulatory, municipal, or utility matters is a plus.
