Summary

As an Aerospace Flight Systems Aerospace Engineer with the Engineering Branch of the Aircraft Operations Division under the Flight Operations Directorate, you will provide engineering technical data for the repair, modification, or integration of payloads on Johnson Space Center's fleet of aircraft currently the T-38N, GV, Supper Guppy, WB-57F, and TH-57B. Tasks include generating and reviewing drawings, analyses, and designs that meet the airworthiness standards required for safe flight.

Duties

Develops, tests, evaluates, researches, operates, maintains, remodels, and decommissions aircraft and/or spacecraft.
Works alongside contract aerospace engineers to perform various duties to incorporate new technologies, improve reliability, extend the life of an aerospace vehicle, or reduce total ownership costs.
Conducts specialized studies on flight vehicles, which may include overall and individual major systems components, and additional airborne equipment encompassed in the structure, to ensure their safety, suitability, and effectiveness in operation.
Generates and applies theories, principles, practical concepts, processes, and systems related to engineering design and its standards, codes, techniques, and practices for aviation technology.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:

Developing and integrating flight vehicle systems and elements, including the resolution of issues. Issue resolutions will be required on all aspects of development and operation, including system performance, configuration, component definition, operational capabilities, reliability, safety, etc.;
Analyzing, testing, evaluating, validating and certifying flight hardware, software and system capabilities based on design and operational and safety requirements; and
Integrating unique systems, customer products, and project and/or program elements to satisfy vehicle design and operational requirements.

Education

This position requires education or exceptional experience

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics cours
