About this role
Company Overview
Compass Packaging Solutions, a SupplyOne company, designs and manufactures custom business-to-business protective packaging, including heavy-duty crates, corrugated packaging, and custom-engineered foam. We are seeking an on-site engineer to provide end-to-end packaging design, application support, and manufacturing support at our North Billerica, Massachusetts facility.
Core Responsibilities
- Packaging Design and 3D CAD Modeling: Develop custom protective packaging in SolidWorks, including shipping crates, corrugated and foam assemblies, reusable cases and inserts, blocking and bracing systems, and engineered cushioning solutions.
- Customer and Application Support: Collaborate with customers, account managers, and internal teams to gather technical requirements, evaluate applications, develop design concepts, and recommend cost-effective packaging solutions.
- Cost Estimation and Quoting: Prepare material takeoffs, evaluate labor requirements, and calculate estimated production costs for self-generated packaging designs in support of accurate quotations.
- Prototyping and Design Validation: Coordinate the development and evaluation of prototypes and samples to confirm fit, function, manufacturability, material performance, and customer requirements.
- ERP and Document Control: Use ECI JobBOSS² or similar ERP/MRP software to create and maintain bills of materials, revision records, routings, and production documentation.
- Manufacturing Support: Partner directly with production personnel to transition designs into production-ready packaging, resolve manufacturing constraints, and support continuous improvement on the shop floor.
- Production Documentation: Create and maintain fabrication drawings, assembly instructions, cut lists, specifications, and other documentation required for consistent production.
- Material Selection and Compliance: Select appropriate wood products, corrugated fiberboard, foam, hardware, and related materials based on product fragility, dimensions, shipping conditions, customer requirements, cost, and sustainability objectives.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent relevant industry experience will be considered.
- Technical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D part and assembly design, with the ability to create clear, accurate production drawings and documentation.
- Communication: Strong written, verbal, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to customers and production personnel.
- Location: Ability to work 100% on-site at the North Billerica, Massachusetts facility.
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Two to five years of engineering or design experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or packaging environment; recent graduates with strong relevant coursework, internship experience, or a design portfolio will also be considered.
- Experience with AutoCAD, ArtiosCAD, or other 2D design platforms.
- Working knowledge of ECI JobBOSS² or a similar manufacturing ERP/MRP platform.
- Experience with industrial wood fabrication, CNC cutting, foam conversion, or corrugated packaging production.
- Knowledge of MIL-SPEC, ISPM 15, ISTA, ASTM, or other applicable packaging standards.
