PRN GI Tech

Under the supervision of the RN, the GI Lab Technician performs various care activities and related services necessary in caring for personal needs, comfort and safety for a specific patient population (ANA Standards of Delegation, 2004). The GI Lab Technician must be able to demonstrate growth and development knowledge and skills to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patient served. Employees must be able to successfully complete job specific orientation, competencies, and meet/exceed standards as identified in the criteria based performance appraisal. GI Lab Technicians must demonstrate awareness of patients rights in all aspects of patient care and reports issues to appropriate person.

It is expected that within 6 months of hire, the GI Lab Technician will complete the SGNA Associates and Advanced Associates Programs which help GI Lab Technicians substantiate their skillset and knowledge in the GI/endoscopy setting. After successfully completing the Associates and Advanced Associates Programs, GI Lab Technicians are recognized as either a GI Lab Technician II or GI Lab Technician III.

Some GI lab Tech responsibilities consist of:

- Setup, operation, general maintenance and troubleshooting of the video equipment, endoscopes, endoscope reprocessors, equipment, and patient monitoring equipment.

- Assembles and sets-up items needed for procedures.

- Assists procedure room nurse and physician during procedures.

- Cleans, maintains, and restocks procedure rooms after each use.

- Competently processes/cleans endoscopes.

Education and Experience

Completion of high school education or equivalent. Previous patient care or nursing assistant experience desired.

A mixture of 8, 10, and 12 hr shifts with eventual rotating call and weekends/holiday requirements for GI Lab Tech II and III

Qualifications:

- Certifications:

- Basic Life Support (BLS) - CPR certification required.

- Skills:

- Knowledge of endoscopic equipment, procedures, and sterilization protocols.

- Familiarity with medical terminology, patient care procedures, and basic anatomy.

- Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on providing quality patient care.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to stand for long periods, bend, and lift heavy objects.

- Dexterity to handle delicate instruments and perform detailed tasks.

- Ability to remain calm under pressure and effectively respond to patient needs, especially in emergency or urgent situations.
